Cattleyas with a NOSE?? And no frills??
Hey everyone!!
I realized that I have a thing for cattleyas with a "nose." I also dislike the extreme frilliness some cattleya alliance orchids present. What I mean by the "nose" is that I prefer a cattleya alliance orchid with a visible column that is large and nose-like. This is really visible in the orchids I am about to list: I love plants like the Iwanagara Apple Blossom. I love cattleya cherry song. I love cattleya intermedia. But beyond these, I can't seem to find specific catts that I like. It feels like I'm grasping for straws when I look orchids up because I can't seem to find anything that fits my fancy. Do you folks have recommendations? Bonus points if you suggest pink orchids! But any color will do! |
Not quite certain what you mean by 'nose'. Do you mean column?
Here are some good pictures of the different species to help give you a lead. https://www.aos.org/Default.aspx?id=450 https://www.aos.org/Default.aspx?id=407 ---------- Post added at 02:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:15 PM ---------- Good luck! |
Yay, another person that doesn't really like the frills on cattleyas. I wish I could help, but I don't grow many of these =\ One I do grow (but haven't bloomed) is Pot. Hawaiian Prominence 'America'...it has a little frill, but not too much. I kept it too dry when I first got it and killed off all the roots (oops!). And yes, I know it was too dry...now that I have stepped up my watering it is recovering quite nicely.

Glad to know that someone else dislikes the frills. I've noticed that "orchids by hausermann" has a lot of less-frilly catts. |
We seem to share part of that taste. While I can live with the frilliness, I'm not too keen on the rounder BLC or RLC. I do prefer the less in-your-face types like intermedia and forbesii, there's just something about the more tubular lip. This can be seen in bowringiana and maxima too.
You're likely to find some good ones among C. walkeriana, forbesii, porphyroglossa, granulosa, aclandiae, Elizabeth Fulton, and Tropical Pointer. LC Ports of Paradise isn't too unsightly either :-D |

The first ones that come to mind are walkeriana, aclandiae (both already mentioned), nobilior, bicolor, tigrina, gutatta, and amethystoglossa; to name a few.
