OMG! My Beautiful Pink Vanda is Spiking!!!

This is a NOID vanda bought from HD in July last year, so I will see it in bloom again almost exactly a year from that.

It spiked about two month ago, but due to my lazy watering it stopped growing any further. What a disappointment after all that watering for many months! lol

Then I noticed another spike staring deep in the leaf pocket about a few weeks ago, and I've been watering every day (or very close to it).
The spike is now well above the leaf pocket and I'm very excited about it.

My worry is that I will be gone much of the next month and I plan on leaving this plant at a friend's. Not sure if the spike will make it without my intensive care.
but really, it will be very upsetting if I see the spike dead.

A little bit of my culture.
This plant came in a large acrylic vase with no mix.
When I water, (which happens about every morning usually although I did get lazy a few times last fall into winter when I wasn't sure if I were to keep the plant, and plant did dehydrate a bit,) I take the whole container
to the bath tub and fill up to about half the container, that's where all the roots are. I would occasionally add fertilizer at about 50 ppm N.
I leave the plant in the water (or fertilizer solution) for anywhere between 10 min up to two hours or more.
Two hours or more is when I did not water often last year and the plant suffered, so when I did water it, I watered it GOOD, which helps. Or I forget about the plant and go out all day. hahaha
When I am good and water nearly everyday, I soak it for about half an hour or so.
The plant sit in the sunny south window with no curtain, but most of the plant body is inside the vase still and so far so good.

The last photo shows flowers of this plant from last summer. They are gorgeous!!!

With the speed it is growing, I think I can keep the plant for about two more years. After that, it will grow way above the vase and I will not like to deal with it.
What a pity I don't have a greenhouse to hang this up and just hose down everyday.
Oh, well...

Maybe try a large clay pot with chunky bark when it gets "too big".

When it gets too big, chop the top off, if you can get several roots on the top section you will most likely have two decent plants, the bottom section will re shoot.

Oh, that's right & mail me a section. :) Just kidding. Good idea though about splitting the plant if it has the upper roots.

Wow pretty.

Vandas are high maintenance but i find them very straightforward and dependable bloomers.

Good luck! Although such a sudden change of environment can cause spikes to abort. Vandas are very fussy about being moved about.

Nice. I need to try this with my vanda.
