Noob with a keiki question...help :(
I've had my phal about a year and a few months back I noticed my first keiki starting. I read to leave it attached as long as I could stand to. So I did. I carefully removed the keiki and have had it in succulent potting soil. The air roots were going bonkers before I removed it from mom and I'm noticing they aren't turning down into the medium (is anything you put around the roots considered medium?). Also my keiki's freshest new leaf had blackened and has withered away enough to be plucked out this morning. My roots are drying up and I need help. I have the keiki sitting in water for a few..
I tried to attach some pictures. I can't figure it out. Clicked manage attachments and it brings me to log in page. Please don't stone me for any wrongdoings, I'm still a pup in orchidland. Thank you. |

Hi and I hope we can help you figure out just what is wrong with your orchid and keiki . One you said it is now in succulent potting soil this is the wrong kind of medium for orchids. You need a bark mixture with a bit of spag and some perlite. This helps the orchid to drain properly. Water once every 7 days or so. You can use a skewer to check if your orchid needs water. But putting it into the bark mix and letting it sit there for about 3 mins then pulling it out and rub your fingers over the skewer, if you feel its damp give your orchid another day to dry out a bit more. Phalenaopsis grow in trees on bark not in soil or dirt of any kind. Fertilize them twice a month and at half strength and flush once a month. On the third week I use liquid Seaweed kelp also at half strength with water. This will give you a general idea on how to take care of your orchid.

:welcomeflowers:
Any time the newest leaf comes out like that, with the base blackened, I would suspect crown rot. |
I can't say for sure either but my vote is with WhiteRabbit about possible crown rot.
Welcome to the board! :) Can you tell us a bit more about your care of this keiki, such as how you water it, how often, etc. |
idk what to do :(

Your plant is definitely not getting the water it needs. It could be from under or overwatering, either will give you basically the same kind of result, wilting leaves.
Plants make keikis for various reasons. One, their happy, or two, their trying to self-preserve themselves cause their dying. Unfortunately based on the pic I'd have to say it's the latter in this case. Have you taken the mother plant out of its pot to check to see what kind of condition the roots are in? If not, I would asap. Could mean life or death to your plant. Please let us know what you find. Good Luck! Judi |
