Nature's Way Caterpillar Killer - Dipel INGREDIENT (Bacillus thuringiensis)
 

HI :)

I am new just joined this site today i was looking around the forums about killing Gnats and found this product.. YATES Nature's Way Caterpillar Killer - Dipel (Bacillus Thuringiensis) will it be ok to use in my bark orchid media to kill Gnat larvae and Adult Gnats.. do i soak my orchids that have bark in their pots in this solution.. IS IT SAFE? TO USE ON MY ORCHID LEAVES AND MEDIA?? main ingredient is Bacillus Thuringiensis
I have these bugs in my orchid pots which are inside my house.. they are also flying around my orchid plants

my bark media is new and fresh i dont why i am getting these black bugs..
it reads 10mg mix with 5 litres of water..

I store my bark and moss in the garage - and it gets below freezing in Winter. So I repotted in the last 2 weeks - all these repotted plants are in a separate room in the house. I suddenly had a gnat problem - which I solved in the easiest way by relocating one of my butterworts into the room. From zero gnats on the leaves - to at least 10 and counting - in 3 days.
Gnat 'eggs' seem to be able to withstand freezing temperatures, but the adults can't withstand a butterwort !
As for your natural solution, I have never used it so can't comment.

You should try googling it. I don't really like putting chemicals in my plants. If I had a gnat problem; I would just repot my orchid with new medium and clean it thoroughly as well as the plants rooting system. Its good to even check the stems where the flowers were once in bloom.
I found one gnat snuggled in there in my small Phal. I also moved my plant to the other side of the house so its doing a lot better.

Gnats are only a problem if you choose to see them that way. As a grower of carnivorous plants as well as orchids, I see them as a valuable food source for my Drosera.

Some mediums are already infested with gnat larva when you buy them. I bought a well-known national brand of orchid mix for my Columnea and it was already full of eggs. It happened with their regular potting soil for tropicals that I bought as well. I switched brands of medium, repotted everything, and haven't had a problem since.

I haven't done it myself, but on another garden forum, people recommend using Mosquito Dunks to get ride of gnats. The active ingredient in that is Bacillus thuringi- ensis subspecies israelensis.

Hopefully, someone with more experience with it will be able to tell you for sure.

Oh I need some butterworts quick! I can't stand gnats, they always, and I mean always land in my coffee or tea 😢 I have a one bedroom apt and my orchids and plants decorate every room and windowsill.

lol....you only need one as they propagate very easily through leaf cuttings.

Drosera capensis is a better choice if all your growing space is indoors. Butterworts require distinctly different care during different times of the year to thrive long term. Keep a capensis wet with mineral free water and bright and you will have seedlings in every pot on the same windowsill,!

I can't find any here in Colorado Springs, but I have only been looking for about 6 months. There is one person who has a carnivorous greenhouse here but he won't have an open house until the 23 of May. Hopefully I can purchase a few, then propagate thru leaf cuttings :)
