My den nobile smells of mothballs?

Hey everyone!!

In the store the plant had a sweet fragrance, but now that it's home, it smells of mothballs. Ugh, this is in my top ten most hated scents.

Luckily it is not very strong, but I can smell it if I go sniff the flowers. Is this normal? I know orchids take a while to "warm up" in the bloom cycle and generate their true scent, but this is another gross one!!

Is this common in nobile types?

Hi Astrid

I have read descriptions of D. nobile as having a "slight sweet fragrance". Personally, I find my perception of the scent of orchids to be somewhat different from how others perceive the scent in the same plant. For me, my perception seems to vary the most from how others interpret a scent with the Dendrobiums. Some describe the scent of D. unicum as tangerine-like; I don't smell anything! D. kingianum smells medicinal to me; others find it to be wonderfully sweet. Maybe you are sensing the same thing?

You might want to see if your new plant has a different fragrance at different times of the day, or maybe at different points in the bloom cycle. I have some plants that are day fragrant, some that are night fragrant, and some that have little fragrance at the beginning and end of their bloom cycle, but have the best fragrance when the flower is not too young, not too old. Maybe you are sensing the same thing?

You could do with your D. nobile what I do with My D. kingianum; I keep it where I can see the flowers and enjoy them from a distance (but not too close to where my nose will be).

That must be real fun. And I tend to end up with 'fragrant' orchids that are not fragrant (I need to stick with proven clones). :|

:hello Don't buy a stanhopea then or you will not want to go back inside again.:((
From ZERO to Twenty well done. :bowing
What particular Genera (type) are they?
It may be time for you to start and focus on a particular type if you want to get some with a nice perfume. Take note of the comment made by the whisperer he "nose":waving

Yes. That's what I meant. In a German forum, we always say : ,ich hol schon mal das Popcorn', if we are expecting an entertaining thread. 😄

No schadenfreude (didn't find a translation for that word... Your threads are often very special and I like special things :-)

You had problems with the scent of another one recently. Often people think something smells good, I think it smells like bug spray, or old socks. Since the chocolate incedent, I think my nose is off. I would certainly never try to get a job smelling perfume.

I think nobiles smell putrid.
They all smell of rotting mustard boiled in sugar to me.
So it's not just you lol.

Mine went outside where I didn't need to smell them.

Oh no, not a good smell at all, also one of my top disliked smells. I have a memory love 'fizz' and it didn't smell like moth balls ( thank god! ) well I hope it's a pretty flower and you can appreciate it from afar.
