Help picking next orchid
Hello all! I am new around here, and I am looking to get my next orchid.
I currently own a large Dendrobium kingianum (which is currently sending up a ton of spikes), a Dendrobium delicatum 'snowfall', an Oncidium ornithorhyncum, and two noid Phals. I am mainly looking at miniatures. I have been talking to a seller I trust, and he has given me several options. Dinema polybulbon Mediocalcar decoratum Epidendrum porpax Barbosella orbicularis An unnamed Platystele species Neofinetia falcata What are your recommendations? I'm looking for something fairly adaptable to standard inside environments. What are you favorites just for looks? Thank you for all of the help! |
Neofinetia falcata. They are very easy, have fragrant flowers, and are very attractive out of bloom. I have a noID one that is quite small, perfumes the entire room with just four little flowers and has a nice, tidy form.

I second neofinetia falcata. Just got one myself and even without spikes, i love looking at the purple roots and beautiful leaves.

If you want something novel go for the Epi Porpax . This grows well on a raft or mount and if you use a 1/1/2' branch off a fruit tree the Epi Porpax will eventually grow into a ball flowering all round.

The easiest in that group is Dinema polybulbon, followed by the Neo. They will do fine in the conditions your other plants have. Good choices for a first mini. The others are a little delicate by comparison.
The Dinema can easily quadruple (or more) in size in a year if it is happy, and flower at any time, so can be a very satisfying choice that quickly shows you how you are doing. If you grow it well you will always have divisions to give away and start new orchid addictions among your friends. |
