My first Cymbidium orchid!

Hello everyone. I just purchased my first Cymbidium orchid from the local grocery store. It is from Westerlay Orchids in California. It has a soft floral fragrance. I am going to email them and see if it is named. Enjoy everyone! :)

very pretty. I recently turned down a cym at trader Joes. It had both yellow and pink blooms (must have been 2 in the pot ) I carried it around for a while then ended up putting it back. It was just so BIG . It was a good 2 and a half feet tall and 8 inch pot. Too big for my grow space. I want to try one, but a little smaller would be nice. Yours seems to be a nice size.

Welcome to the OB and I truly commend you for attempting to find the name of the plant, but Westerlay is a very large commercial California distributor and in most cases could care less what the names are. This is the biggest problem with buying from box stores, TJs and the like. Yes, it is a good way to get your first orchid and to definitely learn from the experience. If you make mistakes, there are always more out there to not make the mistakes on again without a large financial loss.
And believe me, few people go through the initial process of growing orchids without losing a few along the way.

Good luck and read, read, read about the culture needed for your Cym. Consider it a pretty guinea pig and enjoy it, even it you do not find out its name.

A very enticing Cym, if I say so myself ;).

Thank you everyone for the lovely comments. Unfortunately I did call Westerlay today and they said that they do not have name for there Phals or Cymbidiums unfortunately :( However, I did compare the bloom on my Cymbidium on a website and it is. 99.9% match to Cymbidium Caitlain 'Pink Delight' :) Regardless, it's my first trial run with a Cymbidium and if I do wel with this one I will try and obtain a actual named one ;)

Your plant has many differences from the Caitlin 'Pink Delight' I pulled up on the Internet: yours is larger, it is a darker pink and the lip is almost a totally saturated red. Always beware of "looks like" when you have no label. It is very tempting to guess but the end result is seldom ever right.

I agree with Cym Ladye. Read as much as you can. Try the many sites on the net. Try the New Horizon blog. It is from California. They sell orchids too, and supply all the relevant details. Good luck.
