Tamiami Orchid best in show winner (I believe)
 

Phals aren't my thing, but this was pretty cool. Didn't bother looking at the ID since I don't collect these.

Sweet? Maybe. Best in Show? I don't get it. I am not a judge but I would like to know the opinion of others. Why is it so special?

The front of the flower is blood red. The back of the flower is pale yellow. Almost perfect. Some of the red bleeds over into the yellow part. But bearly noticeable. I think most judges are stuck to only award Cattaleya and Phalaenopsis. Why? Just look at the number of forum post for those two species and they make up most of this website. I personally love and grow Bulbophyllum(one of the least posted forums on here), and there was only one entered for judging. And not to my surprise it didn't win any awards. I'm only 28 years young. And I'm almost always one of the youngest people at the shows down here in Miami. I also favor rare > abundance. Either I'm extremely picky, or just don't follow "trends". Or I'm just the next generation to have taste for something else.

Hope one day my bulbo hybrids win an award !

I think it is because of the show of flowers and ease of culture. Phals in my opinion are great because they seem to be easy and there blooms last so long at lease the longest for me. I love my Catt's because there showy but the blooms don't last as long and they smell nice or at least some do.

I have yet to try Bulbo's but am going to. I love there weird blooms but I will say that I'm not sure I want ones that smell like rotting meat. That could be one reason why people don't grow them as much. And I don't know but are they harder to grow? I'm just learning.

It's strange what one person likes another doesn't. It makes us all individuals, even though they want us all to be the same. I don't think we are suppose to be it is what makes the World wonderful to me :biggrin:

I noticed Catasetums and Bulbophyllum do really well for me with all the heat and water that we have down here in Miami. They pretty much double in size in some cases from year to year, while most of my other species barely get one leaf out. To each is own pending on your grow zone. I appreciate the longevity of the Phalaenopsis flower. But I also feel like the whole all Bulbophyllum rotten meat stereotype over shadows the whole species. They all don't stink, only real down fall is some of the flowers don't last very long compared to the rest of the orchid scene. But when they are I'm flower it's really cool seeing all the different shapes they all produce. They grow like weed and they're really easy to grow. I keep some bareroot, saves me money when you got over 120 different orchids to repot :rofl:

Well, judges are humans and it's just another "opinion" after all.
With that said, I also think it's stupid that this is the show winner. Are you sure about that??

One thing I know about that kind of phalaenopsis is that the "red" ones have been tried over and over and it is still work in progress, even with quite a few nice red hybrids in the market.
Often, the flower count is rather low on these guys because of the species involved in making these are sequential making only one or just a couple open at a time.

This particular one has quite a few flowers open all together, the color, substance is all good from what I can see in the picture.
So maybe all these gone into consideration, it can be something, but show winner? gotta be kidding me!
One of the reasons I'm not interested in judging and all that.

Another possibility is that its fragrance was so heavenly that people lost their mind. :rofl:

I still wish you had taken a picture of the name if you were going to post the flower shot anyway.

We can hope another member can help ID this. I really didn't see anything at the show that was really mind blowing. I personally thought some monster Vanda should of won. the flowers were salad plate size.

the phal is Phalaenopsis Ken Avant and was shown by krull smith . It won best phal and reserve grand champion.
The dinner plate sized V. Tokyo Blue 'Island Moon' won an AOS award with 82 points.

wonderful full red waxy flowers on any orchid that gives you more than a few buds at a time are hard to come by and expensive when they are offered up. the mother plant on the Ken Avant was said to have had over 100 flowers.

100 flowers all at the same time would look amazing!!!! plus, even better if this is a fragrant cross. Wow~
