Blooming Other Orchids not Phals
 

If you have new growth is it safe to say you will get spikes?

I have a mystery Miltonia I bought really cheap $3 because it was not in bloom. It was in poor shape but now 5 months later I have not 1 but 5 new bulbs growing fast and well. It growing like a weed now.

My Spider orchids, Zygo and Beallara all have new growth too. But I bought a Large Sherry baby that had lots of new growth. It looks like the new Growth has stopped developing? It was a stressed out plant.

I know these plants need new growth to bloom. Is seeing new growth a Guarantee that you will get spikes? I am new to Orchids that are not Phals. But I am so excited to have my others bloom again.

No, new growths is by no means a Guarantee of spikes. But there is a good chance of spikes, IF the plant is mature enough and is receiving good conditions such as has good roots and getting good moisture. Also is receiving proper nutrients and not too much nitrogen which will promote all green growth but not blooms. And the plant needs enough light in order to bloom also. Sometimes a temperature drop or shorter days is also required to initiate blooms. You should research each type and see what their individual needs are. Good luck and I hope you see some blooms.

Ok so if the plant is happy and roots are healthy you have a good dip in temp there is a very good chance that your plant with new growth will bloom.

I have a good feeling Mine will give me flowers.

Good light or should I say proper light, good watering plus occasional feeding, then all good!

Not all orchids need temp drop, and actually of handful things I grow, only phals and nobile dendrobiums are the ones that need cooler temperature to spike. Phals just little bit, nobile dendrobium a lot lower than growing season.

Cattleyas are usually affected by day length not by temperature.

Many oncidiums and related intergeneric (beallera and many others) do not respond to cooling, or anything. They just bloom when the new growth matures.

I am feeding regularly . 2-3 times every month. I have some fert for growth and another for blooms. I have them all in east and south facing windows. I am pretty sure my Miltonia will bloom it's in one of the south windows and get everything it needs . I am very excited to see it bloom.

Fertilizing is of the least importance.
Some might argue, but I believe most people overfertilize.

Good light and good watering are the most important.
A little fertilizing while plants are actively growing is more than enough.
