New vanda first timer-what now? Dead roots?
4 Attachment(s)
Hi everybody, my dad got me another orchid yey!
It's a vanda not sure which one... I know that it needs a lot of light, and humidity. I'm hanging it on the window bare roots. Many of them look dead to me should I cut them? Is it normal that so many are dry? Just need a little guidance to make sure this plant will grow nicely! Thank you so much! |
After a good soak or spray, whichever is your preference, the live roots will be green (they'll generally be white when dry) and the dead root will appear brown. The dead roots can be removed with a sterilized tool. To sterilize the tool just pass it through a flame. I find a butane lighter works fine for this.

Thank you! I've noticed there are some marks on the leaves, is it sunburn? If anybody could give me some tips to make it bloom, I would be very grateful! Thank you in advance!

Yes that is sunburn, and I would leave the roots alone. Plant looks very healthy.

Nice :)
Very excited now to get it to bloom! Was bought just like that, don't know what colour it's blooms are! I soaked it in a bucket of water (the roots) for around half an hour 40min or so and then hung it.should I do this every day or mist it? I'm scared the plant will dry so I mist anyway just in case...just wondering if it's better to soak it daily.. ---------- Post added at 12:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:19 AM ---------- Oh the poor thing was super dirty, I cleaned the leaves with a wet cotton with some lemon drops and then cotton bud in between leaves...however I can still see stuff deep in there. Would it affect the formation of spikes? |
In your climate you will need to soak daily. I grow mine in baskets or vase culture. That way I don't need to soak every day but I do mist. It's hard to say for sure what the stuff between the leaves is, but I know mine tend to have a little black stuff in there from water getting between the leaves. It doesn't seem to harm them.

Will do thank you

OK starting to panic lol
I've noticed these dark 'veins' on my vanda...wondering if it's normal or what it is!! Looks creepy! Its not everywhere and not in the new growth..earlier I soaked it in water for a few minutes and then added a minimal amount of fertiliser, such a small amount compared to the instructions. I hope it didn't burn them! |
