White spots on some roots, black spots on others?

Just got this Vanda coerulea seedling in the mail two days ago and am wondering about these spots. There's one root with very tiny black spots and then white spots on a lot of the other roots that I saw more clearly after I watered it.

The base of the plant looks a bit dark and discolored here as well. And you can't see from the picture but the tips of all the leaves are ragged. They appear to be yellowing too.

I'm thinking the white is possibly scale? Anyone have any ideas what's going on with this one?

If the ragged leaf tops look like this, that's normal.

The roots look ok to me, but hopefully other members will be chiming in.

I am not sure if the darker area at the base is something to worry about ... again, hopefully offers will chime inAttachment 106581

Thanks! That is what the leaf tips look like--glad to know it's not a problem.
