Strange phal side spikes
2 Attachment(s)
Could someone with more experience take a look at my phal's offshoot spikes and tell me if they look normal? This is my very first rebloom, so I really don't know what to expect, but for some reason they don't look like spikes I see on pictures on the internet.
I first noticed these little spikes appear almost a month ago. They grow slooooly. Now they keep getting longer, but they look like they almost have a bud maturing already? Does this mean I'm only getting 1 flower from each, or could they still get longer and produce more flower buds? Thanks! |
Hrm... the first pic, I would say that this is just a spike, but the second one doesn't look like the usual spike I see.
Could it be a keiki? |
Looks like a new spike growing off the previous cut spike.

More buds may (or may not) develop as the spike grows

the spike should continue to grow longer before buds open.

Those secondary spikes usually aren't as big, and don't carry as many flowers as the original spike. they often just have a couple of flowers. If you were going to get more flowers, the spike would have grown longer before buds formed. By the way, those secondary spikes can form even if you don't cut off the primary spike but just leave it on the plant. I've had secondary spikes form several months after the flowers on the original spike died. I leave the old spikes on the plant as long as they're green, but that's only a personal thing. Cutting them off is fine also.
