Hi,
I’m Burr a new guy and “I don’t know nothing about no Orchids or nothing!

Now that I have that out of the way I’ll go on to say I’m 66 and retired from the telephone business in southern California. I met and married a retired Land Banker from the Philippines and after a few years we sold out and retired to the Philippines, just north of Manila.
My wife is a CPA and she works a few days a week to keep her hand in, I do nothing. I workout in the gym three days a week and cycle three days, I’m a under control diabetic so I have to get lots of exercise and eat right.
I have been doing Roses but am having lots of trouble with fungus so I am backing out of the big roses and just keeping the little 1-foot high roses as ground cover. I’ve had four orchids in coconut shells and three in trees; they bloom from time to time. Nice, I love anything that is green, blooms or flowers.
This week my wonderful wife came home with 14 Orchids that she found on a trip south of Manila so I guess I am going to become “The Orchid Man” (my business was “The Telephone Man”).
I have a lot to learn and a very limited place to find information @ this time until I get out and start looking next week. I hope to learn lots of good things from this site and other sites that have good information articles.

Hi Burr!! Welcome to Orchid Board. I think you'll love it here, because you can get so much information all in one place!!

I must say, you probably live in orchid growing paradise!! The climate there will make growing many orchids quite easy as it is so close to their natural environment.

What types of orchids did your wife bring back for you? (Lucky man - I'll bet a lot of the guys here would LOVE that!!)

If you have any photos of them, it would be great if you could post them here!

Many new hobbyists can find orchids are bit hard to take care of and understand their needs. Chances are you'll probably cross that road with some degree of frustration. Don't worry about it, we've all been there at one time or another.
It's great you've decided to jump onto orchids, If you have or need any culture advice, go ahead and give us a post up. You will meet wonderful helpful people here. So, don't be shy :)

Re: Roses - Some roses seem to be more prone to bacterial infections then some others. Wetness and high humidity can do a real numbers on the leaves and the bloosoms. I have found that baking soda to be very helpful when spray down with water ...

1 teaspoon per 1 QT of water once or twice per week. It also help rid the pests from your roses.

In October, I received a kidney transplant, so I get where you are coming from as far as watching your diet. I also have been doing some exercise-I bought a treadmill and walk daily on it. The specimen of orchid that was in the article was really different looking. This is a very interesting place where you can learn quite a bit if you are so inclined or where you can goof around but talk to some nice folks. In any case, good luck on becoming "The Orchid Man." :biggrin:

I am so jealous ,the Phillppines, and here I am struggling to give my new babies the kind of environment you live in. I also am new to orchids ( I started growing them a little over a year ago) and didn't know a dendrobium from a aerangis, but now 150 plants later, I really love these beauties and have learned a lot. like you I love anything green, so the knowledge of plants in general is a big help for beginners ,you're already half way there. But if the bug hits you as hard as it does most of us you are going to see that fragrant plant collection slowly be overshadowed by orchids . MY advise is to do a lot of reading , and even though orchids are pickier about their environment and need to be watered more often than terrestrial plants, they are worth every bit of effort. and since you live in a warm- high light- humid environment, it will be a piece of cake
