dendrobium bigibbum x dendrobium nestor
I just received it today from kawamoto orchids, it's described as a new hybrid and I'm pretty excited about it.
I have a general idea on the care and culture but Does anyone have this orchid or has anyone already grown it and flowered it? Any info would be cool. Or even pictures. :) |
I have not seen flowers on this hybrid, but I can only imagine good things as both parents are pretty.
bigibbum is an evergreen warm grower and nestor needs a little bit of cooling to flower (not very much so) and it drops leaves during the cooler months. Nestor is also usually fragrant while bigibbum is not. interesting combo. Being a hybrid of the two, I would give intermediate conditions but err on the warm side in the winter. If it flowers under such care, great! if not, try a little cooler the next winter. It will need a lot of light and water during the active growing season. I hope you do well with this plant and post a picture when it blooms for you. good luck! |
Down Under Native Orchids market "Tropicool" dendrobium hybrids (registered trademark). Others call them Hot/Cool orchids. From them I have collated the following info:
The higher the percentage of Bigibbum the less water you supply to them in winter. a 50% bigibbum based hybrid you would treat it as you would a straight bigibbum and not water. A 25% bigibbum you would water once a month in that period. A 12 ½% would be every 2 weeks, 6%-3% would be once a week The trick is to keep them DRY in cold weather. The colder the DRIER! In cold weather, when the bulbs start to wrinkle give them a good drink in the morning, avoiding the coldest days. If the bulbs are not wrinkling, they are not thirsty! Tropicools are best grown with full morning sun and 60% shade the remainder of the day. This is what I follow nin Melbourne Australia. Hope it helps. |

Anyway, I just bought a dendrobium bigibbum from orchids limited. I have to say that the hybrid from kawamoto seems to be more nestor dominant, know what I mean? I wanted to upload a side by side pic to show you the difference. |
