Another wonderful cycle...hopefully everybody will make it without bud blast/aborting...
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for:
Cym. Eastern Wind
Wilsonara Kolibri
Laeliocattleya? lost the tag from this one, so I guess NOID.

Congrats! Watching the spikes grow is so dramatic I find! Then the bloom is a month-long climax!

Ula do you grow that indoors? Someone told me try them because they are easy. Then i read they dont do well indoors.

I too love spikes! I currently have about 17 orchids in different stages of spike/bloom.

lotis146 12-09-2014 08:55 PM

Congrats!!!

Daethen, 17! That's amazing, well done.

What do you all find to be more crucial at this time of year to the most successful blooms (for indoor growing)? Humidity? Water? Lighting? temps?

My Wils. Pacific Passage 'Peach Cobbler' is in spike. When i first noticed it it also seems there's a second one but now it looks like only one of them is getting taller. I've also had others spike and bloom with much weaker looking flowers. And this is a "first cycle" for me as you put it.

Thanks for sharing.

To be honest, I have a small greenhouse. That is what the change is for me. I lost half of my collection the winter before I got the greenhouse. I am now able to give great light, high humidity and a nice drop in temperature. I installed a ceiling fan this fall to give constant air flow. I have at least 6 orchids that have never bloomed before that are going to soon. I am just ecstatic!!!

In fact, I bought my Sharry Baby last year with 2 spikes and it is developing at least 6 at the moment. I can't wait!

I'm a windowsill grower...too bad I can't afford a greenhouse, but in my climate the energy expenditures to keep one could be "astronomical". So, whatever seems to grow and flower inside, I tend to keep it that way, all the other orchids get a "vacation" outside as soon as the weather is permitting. Out of the three spikes on the pics only the Cymbidium had to summer outside in order to give me a spike.

Good job, I will be waiting for pics of the blooms.
