Sharry Baby
How big are the flowers on Onc. Sharry Baby supposed to be?
I have several spikes, and a few buds have opened, but they are less than1/2 inch big. I expected them to be larger. This is my first plant, obviously.:( |
Sharry Baby's flowers are small, about as you described them, 1/2" TO 3/4".
There will be a lot of them and they'll have a fragrance that'll trigger your chocolate or vanilla addiction. |
Yeah. The flowers are smallish.
The joy comes in the fact that there's hundreds of them. Well.... if you're better at growing oncidium than I am. |
Hmm... I'd expect a bit bigger - mine at least are slightly over an inch. But yours could be a different cultivar and/or a young plant.
|
All the flowers I've seen are about half an inch big.
They're just very small. Speaking of perspective, I also always thought that cymbidium flowers were maybe 2 inches big at most, but I saw a bunch of cymbidiums at the store the other day and my gosh! Those flowers are the size of my fist!! Of course, these were standard cyms and not minis, but still. It just goes to show you that you never quite know the size of a flower until you see it in person or have something good to compare it to. The Sherry Baby has great little pretty flowers like vanilla scented stars, and it makes a huuuuuuuge long inflorescence on most plants I've seen. Though the flowers are small, it gives a full display for sure! |
I just measured my Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance' that is in flower right now and my flowers are measuring 1 1/4" on the longest part (top to bottom of the bloom). The width is slightly under that - about 1" to 1 1/8".
So yeah 1/2" does seem small! |
I think it depends on the variety one has, I have Sharry Baby 'Twinkle' but I have seen even those larger than mine. So far they have no scent.

As Sonya says, Sharry Baby has a few varieties, but when people say Sahrry Baby without specifying the clonal name, I assume it's the "standard", which is the largest and it is "Sweet Fragrance".
The flower is well over one inch, so it is not that small if you see them in person. Other varieties are about half the size, more or less. If you want the standard Sharry Baby with larger flowers, keep in mind that the plant is also much larger. Make sure you have enough space or greenhouse. Otherwise it is not easy to have that plant around. |
Love to have one, I have plenty of space. 'Twinkle' was the only Sharry Baby I could find on the internet.
If anyone knows where to find 'Sweet Fragrance' please let me know. |
Are you referring to a twinkle oncidium?
I've never heard of a twinkle cultivar of sharry baby. Twinkles have very small flowers, and a light vanilla scent. However the scent profile isn't really similar to sharry baby in my head Perhaps this is where the size conflict is coming from. Of course, there could just be a cultivar i don't know. |
