Divide or replant?
What should I do with the orchids? Divide them or replant them in bigger pots?
|
Do you have a picture?
|
orchids always seem to me to grow better and faster with a pot full of friends....BUT
if its out of shape and growing out of the pot and needs to be controlled it just needs re potted. if its overgrown and the center is fallen out and started to decline, thats a good time to divide. usually orchids grow from the center towards the outer rim of a container. interior plants at some point will start to decline and thats when to divide IMHO and most often will fall apart when you take them out for inspection :twocents::waving |
Should you wish to divide (it's only ever "necessary" for our convenience, or amount of space we may have), any divisions made should consist of at least three matured pbulbs and one new growth. More is better than less.

I guess some dumbbell forgot to attach the pictures.

One looks like an Oncidium and the other like Maxillaria tenuifolia. In both cases, these orchids like to be "pot bound". So in these cases, I would pot up but still keep the pot small.
I would not divide unless the larger pots won't fit into your space :). Then you should divide and share with your friends or orchids society! |
Pot up to a larger size pot. I don't like to divide orchids because they take a while to recover from the stress.

One is sherry baby, one is a max tenuifolia

I have a huge Sharry Baby in the greenhouse in a slatted basket. It is flowering with five spikes about 3 feet long. Been in the same basket for several years. Perfumes the whole greenhouse, gets the hose twice a week and fertilized when it's lucky. Stays outside in SC from March to November.
