Why I Love the Latouria Section
 

I bought this Dendrobium Proud Appeal "Ace" back in August 2013. This orchid has grown like mad since I bought it and has bloomed 3 or maybe 4 (losing track lol) since I bought it, the flowers last about 7 weeks. So it has spent a good part of the past year in bloom. This latest bloom was it's biggest of all: 21 flowers on 4 spikes. One cane has two spikes, and another of the spikes came out of an old cane that had bloomed about 6 months earlier - the ability to rebloom from previously bloomed canes is why I bought this, so I am excited to see that spike in particular! Since I seem to have such good results with this plant, I bought a Den Micro Chip from Hausermann's about six weeks ago.

I may get me a Den normanbyense, one of the parents of Micro Chip - can anyone recommend any other Latouria section hybrids that they like?

I believe this is crossed with Den-phal ? :dunno:

I have a couple BS latourias - Aussie's Chip and Royal Wings - and do recommend them both, they seem to be seasonal boomers, tho with a mature plant (multiple blooming growths) and how long the blooms last, there can be flowers on the plants for 4+ months.

Can you please explain how u take care of ur dendrobium microchip? How's is your doing?

I just found pics of Royal Wings and that one would do very nicely in my cramped grow space, looks about the same size as Proud Appeal. I have Micro Chip, similar I think to Aussies Chip? I think the seed parents are reversed?

I might also get a Den Maiden Charlotte, a local grower has a couple of those around, so that might be my a thanksgiving treat!

I grow exclusively under artificial light and most of my orchids are in Exo Terra terrariums. The Micro Chip is in the same tank as the Proud Appeal and is growing nicely. I have had it about 6 weeks, and it has grown three new canes and one of the old canes started to spike a few days ago. I grow the Dendrobiums under a MH light with the wattage cranked down to 250 Watts, and the top of the plants about 24 inches away from the light. The Micro Chip leaves have a very slight purplish tinge to them. The tanks also have a 1/4 inch glass on top (I removed the screen top). Temps in the tank max out at 83-84 during the day and cool down to 72 degrees at night. Humidity ranges from 70-80% and the plants are watered every three days, after they have almost completely dried. I don't let them dry out as much as my cattleyas. The Dendrobiums are potted in a medium bark/charcoal mix in plastic pots with lots of ventilation slots. The tanks also have computer fans with lots of airflow.

I have no idea how I would grow these on a windowsill or with any kind of natural light unfortunately.

beautiful flowers :)...Ive only done marginally well with them in the greenhouse. Some did not like the cold last year and they have not really bounced back. It wasnt the cold but the wet moisture in the greenhouse that was falling from the ceiling. It rained in my greenhouse from the condensation off the roof when the heat was on...the little cold drops made large yellow spots. They got ugly fast.

I gave a few to my neice who has them in a windowsill and they bloom constantly for her :(..yes..that just kills me. Go figure!!

Anyone grow aberrans well?

I've always heard they are easy but apparently not hands-off easy. I need to move mine to a more attention grabbing location.

Lol, lucky neice! I have some orchids in the office on a windowsill and they hardly get any of my attention. And one of the plants which has never done well at home, no matter what I tried, thrived on the benign neglect it gets at the office and bloomed!

I live near Al's Orchid Greenhouse in Virginia and saw a bunch of very nice looking small Den Green Apples. Are they fragrant? He also had some aberrans which looked very nice, but I ended up getting an amazingly small Neostlylis 'Baby Angel' instead. My wife and I love going there when it is really cold outside, it feels so nice in his warm, moist greenhouse brimming with life. Just might grab me the green apples next time.
