What Would You Call This and is Shade cloth Needed?

Hey guys, Kevin here. Just wondering, what would you call this sort of thing? I want to grow some of my more prized orchids here due to the higher humidity from the sink and because of the sunlight's directions (my main collection is currently growing in front of two windows and the growths of the plants reach sideways, especially the dendrobiums and cattleya hybrids). Also, is shade cloth needed here? Some of the orchids are displaying yellowing leaves like the sharry baby and max. tenufolia while others like the blooming Blc. Yen Corona 'Green Genie' and Neostylis Pinkie 'Starry Night' are doing just fine. The area faces southeast and gets direct morning sun and a little bit of direct afternoon sun. If shade cloth is needed, then what percentage should it be? I'm thinking 30%. Don't worry, air movement will be provided by a small fan that I'm getting this weekend.

For morning sun and late afternoon only, I doubt shade cloth is needed, but that depends upon where you live.
More often than not, yellowing is not due to sun exposure, but some other cultural issue. Reddening or paler green, yes, but yellowing, no. Ray Barkalow firstrays.com |

Looks like what I have and the same direction too. I am looking to fill mine with more plants that want high light. my Phals that are there are doing well but its a bit too much. I just move them inside the window more and they get some shade.
Do you have a backup window for plants? I think this is the kind of thing that might be more trial and error. I have 2 other places to put plants that get too much light. My self I am looking for minis to put in my window. here is mine. I got my daughter a mini rose it lives in the window. |
Actually, this area was supposed to be an extension area of my collection for my higher light orchids. The windows that I have my main collection sitting next to are blocked a bit by my hanging baskets with stanhopeas and gongoras. because of this, I tried to find a location to situate some of them. Right now, the catteyas and brassavola are doing well and the latter even put out two flower spikes just form the move. My Angraecum suffered from sever sunburns though. I really hope it recovers.
