Herbarium of sorts
 

I was just wondering if any of you actually go to the trouble of saving their flowers in an old fashioned herbarium ... you know, squish the crud out of them and dry them, lol.

Here's a couple that I thought were cool enough to try this with.

The one on the left is one of those "pouchless" slipper thingies and the other one has a Fu-manchu almost as long as mine, lol (just kidding) ... and the one on the top right I think was one of those space alien bugs or something. ;

Neat! The one on the top left - if it weren't for having three long tails - looked like it could be a Masdevallia!

Interesting thought, but with the digital technology we all have available to us today, we can keep much more detailed (and colorful) records than ever before.
However, there is a lot to be said for the old fashioned way and having the actual flower in hand.
How did you do make the herbarium display?

Oh to be sure I too have all that neat stuff on disc and so forth, but ... one EMP (electro magnetic pulse) bomb and "Poof", it's all gone.
I just did it the olde fashioned way and dried them between the pages of a book (which will also still be around after the "Poof", lol) and then just got a clear glass poster frame form the local crafts store and hung it up. Makes for a nice conversation piece too. ;)

I did this as a project for my biology class back in high school (not with orchids though), I did mine with native wild flowers.

Too cool. As a kid, I would always find things like this in my mother's old books. Just roses and pansies, no orchids.

I agree -- very cool! This is the way that we've studied plants for a long time. I too would suggest some type of label. You could put it under glass in a picture frame. It's nice to see fellow mad scientists at work! - Justin
