Two forms of henryanum
By form I mean shape. One is more of the typical henry and the other is a bit different I think. The second one has more pointy pouch. and the leaves are narrower than the other one. Weird petal action as well, definitely an odd duck. But nothing outside of the natural variation of the species.

At first glance, the shape of 'Skinny' is so different, that one would think that it is a primary hybrid. Possibly with insigne (based on slipper shape). However, the colors are so clearly henryanum and nothing else, that it can't be a hybrid.
I have always had a love/hate relationship with henryanum, in part due to the bulbous slipper (resembling Jimmy Durante's nose). I find this atypical henryanum very attractive (and would love to trade for a piece of it some day). I think that this very distinctive plant is deserving of a clonal name (something better than 'Skinny' please). |
Wonderful!

What clonal name would you suggest? |
In my collection I use two primary clonal names:
For plants I think could garner an AOS award some day, I use my wife's middle name (Akhtar, which means something like 'shining star' in Farsi). For plants that are unique, and to be kept for breeding, I use the name of the little town I live in. If there are special circumstances, I play around with one of those names. In this case the plant is unique (atypical, but at least to me more attractive), but 'Skinny' (or 'Pointy Nose') does not do it justice. If you do not have a suitable clonal name, I might suggest one of these: Little Dipper (referencing the slender slipper) Pixie (unless plant is too large compared with your other henryanums) Faberge (there should be an accent over the last e, based on your OB user name) |
Absolutely gorgeous, I love everything about this one!
|
I like the more typical one.
How old are these plants? I see that both are nicely clumped. Mine is in bloom and the shape is like your first one but with the weird petal action of the second, which I'm not too fond of. Oh, well... |
