Repotting my noid Phal
9 Attachment(s)
I initially did not want to tackle yet repotting this noid Phal of mine, being lazy and my Phal seems okay anyways. I got this noid Phal in bloom last Oct 2012, repotted it then and stayed in bloom till May 2013. Since then I have not done any repot, just allowing it to grow on that spot, and has grown really nice, lots of wide leaves and now those errant aerial roots too.
So after reading another thread and discussion about potting aerial roots in or out, I decided to work on my own Phal. Have delayed it enough.:) But this time I will try to encourage it to go on a modified mount. Have not really tried mounting before. Always in containers and using bark media. Lately I have been using some hygrolon baggies. Have seen my other noid Phal adjust well to it. Since I still have an epiweb branch and some hygrolon, will use that this time but will put it inside a container too, since I do not have a good space to mount. My overgrown noid Phal with its aerial roots sticking out: Attachment 102980Attachment 102982 The container I will use for this repot. Deep enough to give space for the long fat roots. Sideholes for added aeration. Attachment 102983 My epiweb branch and hygrolon, will wrap around and sew this hygrolon, so the roots will have something easier to attach too. Attachment 102984 Have removed the old bark mix, checking on the roots, just some minor trimming to do, roots are doing really good. Attachment 102985 Now fitting in the plant..had to find that good angle, the plant is big and top heavy already, and I know it likes to lean, so have to put the epiweb branch carefully in between the roots. I do hope it will circle around in time, and have put the long aerial roots below as well. Have added some packing peanuts as fillers. Attachment 102986 Attachment 102987 And there it is..repotted! And then back to its usual perch on my vertical stand, same old spot. Hopefully it likes it. :) As usual our ceiling fan is running, it has been watered too, so giving it some good air circulation. I have a few phals that have some crazy aerial roots. One in particular has pulled itsself into a horizontal position. I reported it recently and used clips to hold it steady, but it still pulled itsself on its side.

Just an update on my Phal. I have found its name too. Phal Baldan's Kaleidoscope. The best part....it is now in bloom woohoo! It truly likes the set-up I have it in:biggrin: Been a long time for it to adjust, but it did and now the bloom show is ongoing! The last time I had it bloom was when I got it first in Oct 2012 and the blooms lasted till March 2013.
Just so happy!happy!happy!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: Attachment 111375Attachment 111376 |
