Vandofinetia dormancy?
I was doing some research before a local orchid show, and looking at what the vendors had to offer. I found a N. falcata x V. coerulescens hybrid, and since I've been wanting a Neo for a while, I might be ordering the plant beforehand. However, I'm just a bit curious about the winter requirements of this hybrid.
I have winters of 60-70F, and summers of 70-90F (90F if I decide to let the plants out during hot days). My humidity is a bit low during the winter, but my other plants tolerate it. I have more light during the winter, which I've heard is typical for wild Neos. Would my conditions be suitable? It'll be my first orchid requiring some type of winter rest. |
The winter temp. should be ok for the hybrid. But it isn't a Neofinetia and they grow quite a bit larger. If you want a smaller sized plant, look for a Neo x Ascofinetia hybrid. Good luck hunting. BTW, many sellers usually have some standard Neo's in stock. Just contact the vendors.
New World Orchids has some nice hybrids if you want, checkout their site. |
You shouldn't have an issue, as this plant shouldn't need a winter's rest. I water my vandas all winter, I give my neos a tad less water, but I don't let them have a rest period where water is completely withheld.
Ramp, this plant should not become too big because Vanda coerulescens is a smaller vanda species. |

I don't think size should be a huge issue, and there is a vendor that specializes in Neos attending to show. I'll talk to the seller and if size seems like a problem, I can always just go for a pure Neo. Thanks for the information though, as I was assuming it would stay smaller.

Do you ever venture west into Michigan? New World Orchids is approximately 84 miles due west of you, taking Interstate 94. |
Just met New World Orcihds at Parkside Orchid Fest yesterday. My NF collection grew by 33%.
I also collected a plant, which I ordered from China 6 months ago. When Holger Perner came to the Slipper Orchid Firum in Feb, he brought me a Neofinetia richardsiana. It is healthy & BS, but still a single fan. I am still searching for Neofinetia xichangensis, but even the Chinese nursery did not have that one. |
