Choosing Bulldog Seedings
 

Hi,

I am currently in my huge, red bulldog phase; i lucked out winning one of the best I've ever seen on ebay this past winter, a division.

I would like to find affordable seedlings which might turn out glorious. I like Hausermann, have had good experiences with them, but the seedings of this sort they offer, many crosses to choose from, have me VERY confused.

Not to mention, in each cross where a mass image is offered (pls use link), same image for all the crosses--- I see not one with the good balance and flat segments, esp the petals, I am drawn to.

When selling Paph seedlings, many sellers show a representative photo. I have also noticed that Hauserman belongs in this category.

Others show either the parents, or sometimes the bloom from a representative early bloomer. The latter is often equally misleading, since there can be great variation in a seedling population.

If you are interested in red complex Paphs, I have some available from my own breeding. I will send you a PM with details.

First, pls see my post: while the group photos of bloomed seedings appear as one would expect on the Hausermann page I linked to, make note: the SAME group photo is used for all the crosses! I would have preferred they put up first blooms re the seedlings from the individual crosses next to those specific crosses.

The variation in all seedlings, unlike divisions.... is a given, and I thought I shared, therein we find my challenge in this, and need to learn to be meticulous, and as informed as possible in what I choose.

Edit: I just went to yr profile and use the link to your site. Interesting site! I see you seem moved to the green bulldogs with the big white dorsals. I am still in my red phase, and I like spots. I will never get over having lost my paph swallow 'karen".....was basically a gift from a guy who liked me at Stewart's (yes, now no longer in business, alas).....a very early bulldog with spots both on the dorsal and petals, art shades, registered & awarded in 1921! I still have the tag.

It is because many crosses produce plants ( or should I say flowers) that look pretty much the same.
The same picture for a few different crosses will serve the purpose.

I prefer the group picture, so I'm mentally and emotionally prepared for some disappointment.
Not that I realize the highly variable outcome of hybrid seedlings, but seeing just one nice example picture can lead to a huge disappointment for me because that image of supposedly the best outcome of that one cross is stuck in my mind and wish for the same (or nearly equal quality) on my plant, which most of the time, does not happen. :(

By the way, I recommend Hillsview in Oregon.
They sell large seedlings of many different crosses including red complex. The price is good.
They specializes in paphs and miltoniopsis.

I have never been disappointed with the quality of the plant I got from them. Very healthy looking with no funny spots or marks on the leaves, which is a big no no for me.

Yes! :bowing As of right now in this heady journey, Hillsview is high on my list! Along with Woodstream. And both depict seedlings from individual crosses and with important data re breeding!

By all accounts, and I also get paid for this, I am a keen differential judge of this and that as I am chasing data in all of life's arenas.....one reason my sig quote from Proust is one of my favs, as it speaks the reality of my own journey. This mini journey is no exception.

But the most meticulous breeders actually do show seedlings from individual crosses. They do not employ the same group image for all. That tells me something about who they are and what they Bring and how they travel.

I also remain a fan of Dave, the ebay vendor with some fab bulldog cultivars on ebay, DIVISIONS, always auctions....from whom I got my fab red, whose flower you liked. Only yesterday, after emailing him, given I had some confusion, he gave me more info about mine.

That Paph should be Paph. Erie 'Pittsburg' HCC/AOS (awarded in 1977). It came from Klehm Growers. Paph. Erie 'Pittsburg' HCC/AOS is on Orchidwiz. That's where I found it after Arnie Klehm told me what the name was after I emailed him about the incomplete tag. Not sure why it can't be found. Are you sure the picture you sent is of Erie? Wasn't the plant in a 4" round pot? Or maybe you repotted it?

I send him a current image of her with her giant new fan.....why he thought any decent grower would have left her (or him) in the pot she arrived in, with broken down bark to the top of the pot, rather than repot her the minute her spectacular bloom faded.....I do not know.

I do not own Orchiwiz....never will. Will spend anything I need to on the components I choose carefully when I build a new computer, but not on that database.

Thanks, NYCorchidman!!! I know you have red bulldogs but among the complexes they are not yr favs. I even recall you bid on another WC on eBay (you have one) and got outbid. That happens to all of us.

I have to disagree regarding your comment on hausermann. I understand your reasoning and also your comment seems more general rather than geared to Hausermann, but they are one of the best. They are great nice people and they have nice plants, and great customer service, which is very important.
As I said, using a group picture for different crosses, considering many crosses yield just about the same looking flowers (roughly), is of no harm in my opinion.

I have never bid on WC on ebay, so that wasn't me who outbid you. lol

I like red complex, again, it's hard to find a nice one and red ones are not as common as green or spotted. at least not to general public.

One word on Woodstream, I'm sure they are nice and all, but from my recent few shoppings with them, I am not very happy.
The reasons being, one, price seems high for what they are worth. Two, plants had scales and other spotting issues on the leaves, and three, size sometimes does not match the description.
Then, again, you might end up with something nice, but I would shop at Hillsview over Woodstream.

For divisions of good Paphs, take a look at both Woodstream and Marriott Orchids. Hope you won't get a sticker shock.

If you are unhappy with plants you got from Woodstream, you should speak with them. I have bought a lot from them, and have never had anything to complain about.

Yes, Hausermann is a very reputable orchid house, but they are not known as a major Paph source. For that, look to Piping Rock, Orchids Ltd., Orchid Inn, Woodstream, Marriott, Krull-Smith, Hilsview & Ratcliffe in England. There are also a few sources in HI, but they produce pot plants (quantity, not quality).

Have dealt with with Hausermann for years, knew Dana Harrison very well, always liked and respected them....but you are right, they are not mainly about paphs.

1) I stand by my comments about disdaining group pics for every cross offered, I delineated my position clearly and in detail.

2) Not going to waste time looking for it, but as I recall, you once posted you owned both famous WC cultivars and tried to get another on eBay at auction but got outbid. I never said I was also bidding. If it was someone else, here I can't imagine who....but I remember it clearly.

3) I appreciate yr comments on Woodstream given they were generated by first hand experience. In all of commerce, items should be accurately depicted. Very alienating when they are not.

Another reason I cherish eBay.....it is a true paradigm of how Capitalism is mean to work: the customer determines the ongoing success or failure of a given business. There, starting with detailed feedback! INVALUABLE.
