Growmore brand seaweed extract: anyone tried it?
 

Based on what I have read on the forum, KelpMax and MaxiCrop seem to be the most commonly-used brands, but this Growmore brand I can purchase literally within walking distance - no shipping. It is advertised as 100% "natural organic", and touts the usual benefits of seaweed extracts for stimulating roots. Only $10 per quart (which is probably more than enough for my needs).

So, I'd like to hear from anyone that has tried this brand. Is it OK stuff? Did you see any positive (or negative) results?

I'm planning on getting kelpmax after this bottle though.

The results were positive. I have constant new roots and growths.
I'm trying out kelpmax because the pictures I see online lead me to believe it might be more effective.

Thanks for the info! I want to give seaweed extract a try, but I would like to try it out without paying for all of the shipping, etc.

It sounds like this brand has worked for you, so it should be worth a try.

It has. Check their bottles though.
My local nursery had some bottles from yeeeeeeaars ago.

I'm definitely getting new roots, and more growths.
But not as much as I see others getting with those two other products.
I was the same. Didn't want to commit to shipping but wanted to try it.
Pleased enough with the results to go for it now lol.

Does seaweed extract seem to have a reasonable shelf life after opening? Or does it lose effectiveness after a few months? Do you refrigerate it, or just store at room temperature?

I don't think they have dates.
It's just... some of them were clearly old. Plastic doesn't age well sometimes lol.


Mine is still working to my knowledge. Roots abound.
I've had it for.... 8 months?
I keep mine in drawer.

I think I remember reading light, and refrigeration destroy the composition. Or something like that.

Seaweed extract will decay with age. How fast I think depends on the species, and how it was prepared, and also on the temperature it was stored at.

Ray indicated that he believes the Kelpmax he sells decays slower at room temps than something like the KLN or Superthrive rooting hormones. I can't remember how long he thought for Kelpmax, but I think it was at least over six months.

What I can say more certainly is that I use Shropshire Seaweed (in the UK) and I've stored that for 12 months on the last bottle, and it was still giving noticeable results as I used up the last of it.

I don't think whether it's been opened or not makes a difference to how long it stays good. Which is why you don't really want to buy an old looking bottle. Not certain on that through.

One of the reasons KelpMax is so much more stable is that it contains natural preservatives, added specifically for that purpose.

The keys to selecting a kelp extract are:

1. A high auxin-to-cytokinin ratio
2. Comes in liquid form, and was never dried
3. Was not cooked or chemically digested to extract it
4. Fresh.

A deficiency in any of those can have an extreme negative effect on its efficacy.

The Growmore product (which I have already purchased following positive feedback here and on other forums) is cold processed and comes in liquid form.

I'm not sure about the natural preservatives, what should I look for on the label?

I am also not sure what the a to c ratio of this product is; what do you consider high enough? I will see if that information is on the label.

Feedback suggests that other's experience has been positive & the product works, so I am giving it a try. I will give it a shot & provide some feedback after it has had some time to work.
