Mini Phal with Violacea Parent?

2 Attachment(s)
Hi,

This evolved in another Identification thread (identity of first hybrid now nailed!); I thought I should make a proper thread for this in case some of the geniuses here might own some identity info. I think it may be a primary hybrid with a violacea parent. But am I sure? Not even close.:(
Note: I held the standard pink right next to the mini to show scale. (While most of my Phals bloomed at the usual time this winter, 5 spiked later.)

Thanks so much in advance!

Thanks Ms. Rosie!!!:bowing:biggrin:

I now think I need to stop making myself crazy re identifying my hybrid rescues. I need to think of The Bard: 'An orchid by any other name...." that's verbatim, I think.

Also, Gertrude Stein: "A rose is a rose is a rose."

Yeah, they are just as pretty by any name. A lot of my Phals are NoID and I love them all

I have a load of rescue No Namers. I was a bit lost when I started trying to keep records -NOID 1, NOID 2 was a bit lackluster for me.... So I decided to give them my own names. I have a P. 'surprise' and a P. 'mystery' - had no flowers when I got them ;)
Would you feel better if we called your's P. 'wee pinkie'?
... This is probably very frowned upon by the purists out there but hey, you've got to have a bit of fun sometimes! Whatever you have there it is super tiny and really sweet :)

Plus...quite frankly...a picture ID for an orchid is a very unreliable ID. There are simply tooooooo many that look alike to get a true ID via pics only. Especially w/phals!

There are some orchids that are so distinctive that a pic ID can be obtained reliably but it's definitely not the norm.

They are both beautiful NoIDs...but they will always be NoIDs so just enjoy them and don't worry about names.

See this? And, they care nothing about what humans have evolved to identify and name them! Forget, if a tiny body of pundits awards them X number of points or not!

I just "saw" a cartoon in my head: 3 AOS judges with climbing gear/harnesses precariously perched at the top of the canopy in a rain forest holding touch screen devices, debating the merits of some orchid.

Thank you:bowing Yes, all 30+ of my Phals are rescues, and right here, I am finally learning to let go of the need to know what they are within our formal lexicons!

So liberating! I actually connect to each plant's "personality" and needs/habits as an individual as I go on tending each. After all, isn't that the only thing that matters? It's about interacting!

But...having said that, how about Phal. Wee pinkie "little charmer"?

I have two other minis, both art shades, but those bloomed at the normal time this winter and are back in their vegetative mode as are most of my Phals right now.

Please keep in mind that unless you have a species (not a hybrid) or contacted the actual vendor there is no way to have "nailed" an ID. There are too many hybrids out there for that to be possible.

Personally, I do have a small issue with that. Giving a cute name to a cute flower is fine. However, the format you are considering using is the standard for known plants. Should you at some point give or sell a division of or the actual plant to someone but forget to mention to them that the name on the tag is bogus, they would likely assume the name is correct. This issue would be further compounded if you or that hypothetical person should enter the plant in a judged show or should take it to a judging station. I would suggest you simply name it: NoID -- Wee Pinkie Little Charmer.

I get you were offended by my happy little dance. But remember, we are each unique; while I have written for ORCHIDS MAG .....I do not identify formally within this subculture; I have no commercial orientation, no desire to have my plants judged, etc.

Truth is, way back, the only reason I realized what I had evolve in two years in my apartment was off the hook/atypical, was, two AOS judges at the first NYC Orchid show I attended took a fancy to me…..and then came to visit that evening. They were stunned. I was taken aback by that, given I had never even seen anyone’s collection, so just took what I had evolved for granted.

So please try to respect/celebrate the miracle that we truly are each unique…..and, in this event, my being happily moved to play, in no way means I am a dilettante. Remember, the best and most serious medical practitioners are moved to the same......not to mention the most brilliant satirists are often the most serious humans of all.

Serious as a heart attack and joyful playing/humor are never mutually exclusive.

What a cool, unique flower! The shape reminds me of Phal micholitzii
