exotic orchid (bangkok sunset) is dying. please help.
Hi,
A friend of mine gave me this exotic orchid. the full name is Rhrds. Bangkok Sunset "M" (Rhrds. Thai Noi x Aer. houllet). I don't know how to care for it so it can start growing new roots and flowering. Please help I don't want it do die. Right now I have it bare root inside my place which is set to a constant temperature of 73degrees. I use to have it outside in the patio which is around 80's right now. to water it i dip it in water every day for a few minutes. I don't know whether to put it outside in the patio or keep it indoor. |
I don't really know this one and I'm not an expert on this alliance, having only just bought my second.
However orchids in this alliance tend to like quite bright light. Without knowing the details of this orchid I can't say how bright, but it's worth moving it slowly to higher light over a few weeks and seeing how it goes (you tend to get red tints on leaves in high light). Your watering method sounds like how I'm planning to water my new orchid in this alliance. Growing them bare root is what most people do, and they like to get plenty of water when you water them so this seems a good method while the roots will fit into something to do this. |
So how did you conclude it's dying?

I don't know if it was mentioned in your other thread about this plant. But you could try using some kelp (seaweed) in the water when you soak the roots, which really promotes root growth. I believe California ( I think you said you live there in your other thread) is rather dry so I would soak the roots well every day but then they need to dry quickly so bare root is good. While it is stressed it shouldn't have really high sun, but these plants do require bright light to bloom. I would concentrate on growing roots at this time in some light brighter than a Phal likes, but not full sun.

The orchid just looks really sad. I was thinking of letting it sit near my jade plant and see how this will work. I know they attach to trees in their natural habitat. Please let me know if this is a good idea.
