what causes the base of the phulb to becoming limp?
This is my 2nd Catasetum to have this issue. The plant acts okay and looks great then it starts to droop and the base of the new growth becomes wilted limp acting. Then the leaves begin to drop off, what causes this. My black pearl i am afraid is not going to survive because its back phulbs are small..i dont want to lose it.
It came in bark mix and i left it in fresh bark mix. The roots are healthy and the plant did fine until about 4 days ago. Now its all wilted... I water when dry it gets the same light as my others, no major changes. But the humidity has been 50% or higher last 2 weeks....nothing has changed whatbhas caused this? |
Rot.
What color is the base? These plants can be prone to rot it is said. I don't think it is you, but the plants being weak or sensitive to invading organisms. If you read the culture information on SVO, it says which ones are the most prone to rot. I think it was ones involving monn. and cyc. |
I have an oncidium hybrid that has one set of leaves doing the exact same thing--they have gone totally limp. But it's only one bulb, everything else seems ok. (For now!!)

Rats. Its a light green. Sorry my phone is not cooperating and allowing pictures.

Sometimes a pblub can turn balck and mushy from a calcium deficiency. Fungus can also cause it.
I have found the adding a calcium supplement (Magi-Calc) to my feeding regime has eliminated the blacking of new growths in Catts and Onc. I don't a have Catasetum so I can't say if this is ir or if it will work. |
Is it just beginning to get limpy?
Keep an eye on the base of that new growth. The color may show up in a couple of days. Soft rots set in all of sudden and that's the end of that growth. |

Chucking it is the safest, but if you have a separate room or growing area, you can still keep it there.
Try not to splash water or mist on the above the ground portion of the plant. For now, you can cut off that growth and apply fungicide all over the plant, then give it time. The bare pb has some dormant eyes, and one of them (or more) might wake up and grow. |
I'll give it a shot. Thanks every one.

Bacteria that loves heat and humidity ....need to boost air circulation and that brown listerine and hydrogen peroxide comes in handy at the same time sterilize the roots and clean it. Spray the whole plant and make sure to soak the media.
