Impressive orchid site. Have already paid up for a year's subscription. I am a novice enthusiast, only really starting growing orchids in the past 2 years, although I've always been fascinated and surrounded by orchids growing up in Malaysia. I still remember monstrous Vandas growing on nothing but massive chunks of coal or smashed brick.
Currently fascinated by Paphs and reading Braem's Paphiopedilum. Fascinating story of competing politics by the early collectors. Still variable success with my orchids. Tend to buy ones which are too young on eBay, and end up killing them from over-watering, over-fertilising, over everything. i.e. I can't leave them alone. An ongoing struggle. Looking forward to learning from the pros here. Have already come across some really good posts, including debate about elemental supplementation! Bring on the science! PS I'm a pathologist by trade, and also am involved in translational cancer research. The diversity of orchids appeals to my nerdy side. |
Welcome to Orchid Board :welcome:

Welcome to the boards, ChipMolly. Most orchids are probably been killed by kindness. We've all done it, at least I have. As to my nerdy side I have been that by profession, software and systems engineering. And, we do love our pictures here.

Haha, yes its hard to feed orchids once a week or so when you are particularly excited about it. I tend to think ok i will give just a little water and so on.
Yes this definitely tickles the nerdiness in me too. |

Welcome from Singapore! You have some nice native species in Australia, I have one from Darwin. Maybe you could start with a specialised collection first... lots in SIngapore, Malaysia and Thailand to pick up too. You may find yourself travelling to South East Asia more often now..

I have actually started to keep my phals in a locked cabinet so I forget about them and don't kill them. Its an experiment.

ChipMolly Welcome to the board. I to have killed a orchid and not to long ago. That's why I decided to join this group with so many others just like us.
So keep reading, keep posting and keep loving your orchids as they will love you back one day with a beautiful flower show. Enjoy your stay here with us all. |
