Tubular phal rescue

Hi fellow orchid lovers,

Received a tubular phal from a friend who didn't quite know what to do with it. Had a keiki growing, which I removed and potted, doing fine.

Researched tubular phals and decided to try an experiment so I cut off the tubular leaf at about 1 inch from base to see if new leaves would grow.

Check out photos in my album "Tubular phal rescue" to see progress of about 6 weeks.

Will add more photos of "experiment" as weeks go by.

Interesting

Yeah, really interesting. I've only seen these tubular leaves associated with terminal spikes in which case the crown can't grow, but in your case because there is no terminal spike from what I can see, and the removal of the leaf is allowing new ones to grow.

Hope it continues to do well for you.

Have just added a photo taken one month later. We can see that the leaves seem to be growing to normal size, but the "stem" is slimmer and a bit to the side. But, seems that my phal has recovered. And yes, Rosie, there was no terminal spike, I guess that's why I was able to do this ! Can't wait to see the flowers, have no idea what they are !
