Need help identifying an Oncidium
 

Hello everyone, I am a new member, and this is my first post. I've used Orchid Board for a long time for orchid information, and I've finally decided to create an account. I can't seem to find any information that might lead to finding the name of this Oncidium orchid, and I was hoping someone here might help me out.
I purchased this Oncidium last September from a Trader Joes grocery store. I chose it because it was extremely healthy, had 2 flower spikes, and was bursting out of its pot. It seems like a steal for $12.95. The tag on it said nothing more than that it was an Oncidium/Odontoglossum intergeneric hybrid, and it was grown by Matsui Orchids of Salinas, Ca. I can't seem to find anymore info from the Matsui Orchids website.
It's a vigorous grower, pretty much doubling in size since the last blooms have faded. The flowers themselves are on the small side, and are densely clustered on the flower spike. In my research to find the name of this orchid, I've found one that has flowers that look nearly identical, it's called Oncidium Cleo's Pride. The difference being the color of the labellum, Cleo's Pride having a white lip and my NoID having a pale yellow lip. All the other markings are the same shape and color. That's all the info I have, hopefully someone can help me out.

Sorry I can't help you with the name, but it is very pretty. If you can get a hold of the grower perhaps they can help, otherwise it will always but a noID.

Doesn't change that it sounds like a nice good growing orchid. Congrats on keeping it healthy.

It is a nice looking plant and what Shannon said is correct.

Oncidiums are very popular and can be interbred with so many other species, that without the assistance of the person who grew the plant, there's no way that you can ever have a positive ID.

Your best bet is to contact Matsui Orchids. Send them an email and a picture of your plant. Do measure the blooms too. Oncidium flowers can be anywhere from half a centimeter to several inches across, so the size of the bloom, does matter in identification. Even better, hold a ruler up beneath the bloom in the photo.

Also, take pictures of the whole plant and the pot that it came in too. Tell them where you purchased it and when.

At least you know where the plant came from! That's a start.

I was able to find contact info for Matsui Nursery, so I guess I'll give that a try. Unfortunately the last blooms faded back in December and it's been aggressively adding pseudobulbs since. I also had to cut its original pot off because it was very tightly packed into it, so that's long gone. Anyway, thanks for your responses!

Since you bought it from TJ's, I suspect it is Colm. Wildcat. Of course you can never be certain.....

It's funny that you mention that because one of my family members bought me a TJs orchid for X-mas. I had no doubt it was a Colmanara Wildcat. This NoID TJs Oncidium flowers are much smaller than the Wildcats flowers. The sepals/petals are no larger than a quarter. I suspect that my oncidium in question is Oncidium Cleos Pride, but I won't know for sure until I get a response from Matsui Nursery.

When you said how small the flowers are - I had another thought. I bought Onc. Green Valley Fragrant from TJ's last summer and it was tagged. I know TJ's sells a lot of "quantity" of any orchid. I was so surprised to find one tagged on the display. Here is a pic of the flower. It is very fragrant (in a good way).

It looks like the striping on this one is different from yours. So maybe it isn't a match.

It has bloomed once since last summer when I got it and it now has 4 spikes as it prepared to bloom again.

I don't want to say your Oncidium is an exact match, but it's a 99% match. The only noticeable difference is that mine has a very slight break in the red on the petals/sepals. I forgot to mention that when my Oncidium bloomed, it had a very pleasant vanilla-like scent that filled the room. For a while I thought my NoID was a type of Sharry Baby.

I also want to mention that when I searched google images for "Miltonidium green valley fragrant" as that's what's in the caption on your photo, one of the photos that came up was Oncidium Cleos Pride. Coincidence? And that my other TJs Oncidium is Colmanara Wildcat 'Green Valley'. It all seems a bit confusing. I've emailed Matsui Nursery, hopefully that will help to clarify things. Thanks for your great contribution, I think we're on the right track here.
