Pitted lesions on Dendrobium leaf
 

Hi all,

I am a new orchid enthusiast and this is my first orchid that I purchased about 2 months ago. I have 2 concerns that i need help with.

1. Other (5) plants do not have similar lesions. It started as very small pin point dots that I ignored. But today i noticed that the lesions have expanded, and the leaf is much thinner in the affected area. It does not feel wet. Other leaves are ok. I rubbed this lesion with a damp tissue and it did not stain red / brown, indicating it is not spider mites? Please advise me on what to do for this lesion. Thanks

2. One of the younger plant's leaf seems to have a yellowish tinge, unlike the others which are more evenly green. Is this normal? Thanks

To answer your second question, yes if the leaves of the Den get a yellowing tinge that is normal. Mine get that too. I usually try to give it more even fertilizer (I usually notice it when I haven't fertilized in a while). I also notice it when the leaf is going to fall off. I wouldn't worry about that.
As far as the pitting, I have not seen anything like that before and am unsure what would cause that.

Thanks, it is a relief to hear that the yellowing is normal.

Guess I'll wait to see if other members have seen the pitting before then....help? Anyone?

Are you misting the leaves and if you do, how long does it take to dry out?

If you mist the leaves how often do you do it?

If you do not mist the leaves, do you get the leaves wet and does it take a long time for the leaves to dry out?

How's the air circulation in the growing area?

Do you have a smaller pot to put the Dendrobium in? The pot looks way too large for the plant.

No I do not mist this one at all becasue we live in tropical Indonesia with an average humidity of about 90%.

This one I leave outside under a palm tree, so it has excellent air circulation. But there was an episode of heavy rain and the leaves got wet and I did not dry them, so I am not sure how long it took to dry.

I dont have a smaller pot, but the roots of the plant are very attached in and around the pot already.

What do you think this lesion is? Bacterial? Viral? Other leaves are fine.

Is it the mayonaise that I applied to make the leaves shine? But other leaves are ok.

I don't think it's the mayonnaise.

I think it's because the leaves may have gotten wet repeatedly. It looks like edema, where the cells have collapsed and died because of being bloated.

If the lesion is not growing, don't touch it. Continue giving the plant good air circulation, and take care not to get the area too wet.

Try cutting back on the watering for a few days, just in case. A short dry spell will not kill this orchid, trust me on this.

Judging from the pics, it doesn't look infectious.

I have family in Indo. I was born there. I'm kinda aware of what the climate can be like. :)

Alright, let's see if managed neglect is the best option.

Are your indo relatives into orchids too?

Not really.

They have some. They don't ask me about orchids, so I have no way of knowing how they're doing with them.

One of my aunts just paid us a visit, so she kinda got to see how I grow mine.
