Looking for help better identifying newest addition (oncidium?)
I wasn't going to get another one for awhile but when I saw this one I just couldn't pass by... It came with a generic tag of Oncidium...At the moment it's potted in what looks like moss in a container with no drainage or air flow. Can I repot it in the same clear plastic pots as my Phals and Brassia? I'm using large chunks of bark for media for my existing orchids, just watering the phals less than the brassia, will this work for the new one too? I can't even really see what the roots look like yet but I'm going to hold off on repotting until some people who know wht they're doing can advise me :)
They really are like an addiction, aren't they? |

This doesn't look like an oncidium to me, it could be... oncidium hybrids are really common, but I don't believe that oncidiums are the only orchids with pseudobulbs and those pseudobulbs do not look like onc pbulbs to me.
I think it might be zygopetalum. Hopefully someone with more experience can help you out. |
The pseudobulbs almost look Enc. To me. But I'm no expert.

Me either! I've got a few oncidiums though, they're probably my favorite orchids, and I've never seen an oncidium with flowers like that, but I have seen zygos with flowers similar to that with the green striping and purple skirts.
I like it and it does look like a healthy plant, but I have no idea how to tell you to grow it. Probably starting with oncidium culture is safe, until you figure out what it likes. |
I think that's an Encyclia (spike coming from top of pbulbs... not Onc or Zygo)- and the blooms look familiar, but I don't know the name - but someone else might!
It's lovely! |

There is no doubt, that is an Encyclia. There are quite a few species and hybrids that are very similar so I'm not sure a precise identification will be possible. Care instructions for Encyclia should be easy to find, but aren't much different from Cattleya in general.

Thanks everyone! I got it at the grocery store, they have a HUGE array and I just couldn't pass this one up. Even though they have a large selection they seem poorly labelled in general. The Brassia I got there bore the same generic Oncidium label.
