Orchids Limited (orchidweb.com)-Dendrophylax Lindenii
 

Hi, everyone,

In the past, I've tried to grow ghost orchids from seedlings, which I purchased from Oak Hill Gardens. they lasted for about a month each time. As most of you probably know, the oak hill gardens seedlings are very tiny. I have a greenhouse in which the humidity can range between 75% and 90%. There's some good movement and good light.

So, recently, I was searching around for another ghost orchid but I really wanted a more substantial one. I found one on Orchids Limited (ochirdweb.com) or $35, the roots are 18-22 cm long. Is that a good deal? Will I have a much better shot at growing it than the little seedlings?

I take great pride in my plants and they are all growing very well! Especially my Dendrophylax fawcettii. My other orchids include Dendrobium victoria-reginae, Aerangis punctata, Cattleya aurantiaca and percivaliana, Ascocentrum pumilum, Grammatophylum speciosum, Brassavola cucullata and a few others...

Also, is Orchids limited reliable? Similar to andy's orchids or the likes?

I've received some very nice plants from Orchids Limited in the past, all were very well packed and nice sized. The only negative that I would relate is that their prices are often substantially higher than other great firms; they seem to edge higher and higher every 6 months or so. You might shoot Andy a note and see if he has any of these in his collection currently. On a different note, I'd wonder if maintaining these in a very narrow humidity range (ie 80-82%) would be a better bet than a 70-90% range. If I remember correctly most of these grow on branches over still water (swamps) in places with low air flow.

Orchids Limited sells nice plants, but they are pricey.

70% humidity is far too low for this species. I'd shoot for 80% - 90%.

I've purchased from them for years and have never been disappointed. Yes their prices tend to be on the high side but they are usually large plants. The company is in Minnesota and their winter heating costs have to be astronomical.

Living in Minnesota, and being a member of the OSM (Orchid Society of Minnesota) I buy from Orchids Limited often, and their plants are VERY high quality, in my opinion. I go to their store to buy things, but I don't have any experience with their mail ordering, if that's how you're buying plants. But I would trust ordering from them.

I can't say enough good things about Jerry Fischer and Orchids Limited. I have been ordering from them for close to a decade and recently had the opportunity to visit this past summer. Jerry is a great guy and gave my SO and I a full tour of their facilities. Yes, the plants are often a little more expensive (not always) but their quality is always top notch. Much of their breeding and flasking is done in house with their extensive collection of breeding material. I've never received anything less than a fantastic plant from them and their shipping methods go above and beyond.

BTW their slipper work is pretty great. They were one of the first to import and work with Phrag. kovachii and even discovered a new species, Phrag. fischeri, in one of their imports back in the day. They also have way more in stock than listed on their website, often times its only a few plants so it's not worth posting. If you have any questions definitely call or email them.

I live near Orchids Limited so they have been my main source of orchids for many years. I agree with Ryan. You almost always get what you pay for: quality parents in breeding, careful growing, virus free, great support and world class knowledge It takes a lot of work and a long time for almost all orchids to reach blooming size. Obviously I am blessed with being able to be there and talk with Jerry, Jason, Robert, and other great staff. They would be great on the phone or by email if you are not in the area.

You can't do this "from scratch" process in the United States cheaply. I think that those of us who can afford it should keep these quality breeders/growers successful because they are a unique resource. I understand low cost orchids at "big box" stores as a way for people to get started but the next stage up requires the kind of support that you can only get at a place like OL.

They have a great variety of plants, even though there is a focus on Phrags, Paphs, and many species.
