My monster phal. fell on top of my other plants on the stand creating a chain reaction.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/27/tyvyredu.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/27/e5e2urab.jpg

Yep...been there! Maybe not quite as much the wreck you experienced but yea, top heavy can create some real issues.

Hopefully it was mostly just a mess w/potting mix everywhere rather than any permanent foliage/spike damage.

No-Pro-mwa 03-26-2014 02:49 PM

Aw so sad. That was what I was just thinking the other day, also could they break?

That is one big mess, I hope they didn't get to much damage.

I just knocked one off the other night, broke the pot and several petals got knocked off. It was a really dumb move on my part as I was on a rickety ladder trying to change the filters on my humidifier.

Thankfully it wasn't as bad as it initially looked, a couple of lost buds and some broken petals.

I'm glad that nothing too bad happened to the plants. I think many of us recognize the scene you displayed with a shudder. :0

Oh! The humanity! ;)
Yeah, there is that ... I imagine big Phals can be especially prone to toppling over if spikes aren't staked - tho I've had Oncidiums do it, especially ones in small pots.

There is the very real possibility that more damage might have occurred if they had been staked. Being staked would have not allowed the spikes to flex which might have resulted in their snapping instead.

Damage wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting ... so there's that. :)

That's exactly what happened. One spike that was actually staked broke off, though not completely, I managed to keep it together, time will tell if the rest of the buds develop.

This has happened to me so many times that I just keep the vacuum nearby at all times now.

It's so nice to know I'm not the only one! LOL!
