Small violet dendrobium ID?
 

Finally tried to resurrect this dendrobium that had been languishing in the backyard. The first picture is a before photo showing how it had spread out with no bottom growth but plenty of keikis. I extracted it from the basket and replanted into several different containers. Since then they have been blooming and continue to generate lots of new keikis at the tops of the canes, but no new canes growing from the bottom.

Canes are less than 1 foot tall and the flowers do not seem to last more than a week or two (at least mine, so far). Based on some previous threads, I am assuming this might be a den. kingianum or hybrid. Might there be something else in its ancestry?

Saw something like this recently. All I can tell you is it has some kingianum and bigibbum in it.

Thanks for the input Dan. I'm curious, what in this plant makes you consider bigibbum? Is it the flower shape/color, plant size, etc? I don't have much experience with identifying plants and I am always amazed at how others can "see" the parents characteristics in hybrids.

Thanks Sonya. I do hope new canes will start growing. Keikis are nice but I already have 3 or 4 pots with this plant. Would like to see them grow and spike. We'll see.

Flowers are too flat to be pure Den kingianum (in species the petals tend to point forward, over the lip).

Also, plant is a tad too 'husky' to be pure Den kingianum. It has something else in there, most likely bigibbum, but possibly something else too.

Not a straight kingianum as the flower is too big. Den. bigibbum tends to give the petals a more uniform spear shape whereas in most Dendrocoryne section species they are either curved or thin and straight. If there is bigibbum in there, it is not the only other species. My suggestion was also based on a plant I saw recently... I can't remember the name of the hybrid but it was one of the older registrations.

Check Den. Esme Poulton... has some similarities so could be one of the parents.

Thanks Dan/Fairorchids, appreciate the insight into what you are looking at when trying to ID or determine parentage. Nice knowing something about where/who this plant may have originated from.

Did take a look at Den. Esme Poulton and it definitely has a lot of similarities. Will wait for the next blooms and take another look through the online images (I had noticed a slight yellow coloration on the lip of my blooms that did not come through in the original pictures).

A kingianum cross of some form. Not sure about biggibum. Biggibum is a large phalaenopsis section den and I would think besides the size of the flower being bigger as yours is, you would see more of the shape of biggibum in the flower. It's a very pretty plant and blooms.

To me it looks like Jonathan's Glory (and if I'm doing my plant math correctly that would make it about 66% kingianum, 22% tetragonum, 6% bigibbum & 6% falcorostrum); I'd initially thought it might be something like Bardo Rose x Ellen, but I'd expect the plant to be smaller...unless anybody knows of a clone of Ellen that was made with the tall form of kingianum (in which case I want a division :) )
