Buds blasted on recently purchased cym
 

Hi, All - While most of the buds have opened on a cym, several blasted. This is my first cymbidium and would like to get ahead of a potential problem. Any assistance gratefully appreciated. The plant is near a SE window and I live in the NE US so the window is not getting strong sunlight yet. (We are getting more snow tonight!) Should I move the plant? Is it temperature? Could you please tell me the right balance of food that I should feed and how often. All the other buds have opened but I am so fearful of losing yet another orchid due to my misdirected "care." So I'm not terrible skilled on the arts of cyms but if this plant is new to you and buds blasted it seems reasonable that the blasting is just the change in environments. Cyms typically like it cool at night and warm in the day. By cool I means 50-60 during bloom and even colder during the rest period to initiate spiking.

Thanks, Ryan. Appreciate your feedback. I am going to hope that you are right. Certainly sounds like the change of environment could do it.

It is not only the warm indoor temps which will cause bud blast on Cyms but the lack of humidity. Cyms are not indoor plants and need natural light and 50% humidity for best performance. However, since you live in the Northeast where leaving Cyms out all winter is out of the question, you will need to find a way to enjoy the bloom in the house but find a winter home away from freezing temps until you can put them outside after all danger of frost/freeze has passed.

You might go to the Search icon on the Forum Menu at the top of this page and look for Cym care. There are many threads available discussing many different problems. There is also a Sticky at the top of this Cym forum with leads to different culture sites.

I hope this helps gets you started on a road to growing this wonderful genus, although you will face challenges along the way with your NE climate.

Thank you for addressing the humidity and temperature issues. I am going to do my best and will also pursue looking for advice on the board. I am hoping I can get the plant out of the house around May 15 when annuals are fit for the outdoors in this area. Thank you again!

the bud blast is a humidity and temperature issue....the green house where it matured and gained energy to bloom has all the ideal factor for growing it....then it went to the display rack for buyers to see = the first time that the water, temperature and humidity changed for your plant....then it came to your environment....
to boost its humidity and warmth=try taking a hot shower with your plant in the sink (not in the shower with you) the steam will help revive it.
