Burning leaves on NoID Phal.?
 

I bought a NoID large Phal. from Lowes on clearance, missing most of its flowers. Until I fix my window treatments, everything is getting limited light from a southern facing window. So, some things, like my seedlings, are under 6500k grow lights. I placed my 3 Phal.s in front of the tank holding my seedlings and grow lights, hoping to get them some extra juice. And so far so good, the mini's look fine and have lightened a bit in color.

The big Phal. however is getting dark red lines around the edges of the leaves. Is this burning? Do I need to give it less light exposure until it adjusts?

It doesn't look like burning to me, but is probably an indication that it is receiving close to its maximum light tolerance.

ditto above...enough light and the leaves of most orchids will exhibit some sort of red pigmentation...lines on the edges of the leaves, or even speckles....very good!

Some of mine do this. I have also burned some leaves and it will get a blotch on it, looks very different.

Agree with the above. If the red wasn't there before then it's a sign of high light (some just have red tint anyway) but it's NOT burn. More like a sun-tan than a burn.

I get this on some of mine, and I don't think you have a problem with light levels even if this is caused by light.

Okay. I knew I had to up the light to them because the leaves are on the dark side of green but it has been less than two days and I wasn't expecting this kind of change so quickly. The lights in the tank are on a timer set for 13 hours.

And here's everything crammed under one window, until I get the east window opened up, where I have one of Home Depot's plastic greenhouses set up. When we bought the house, all of the windows were boarded up, and some windows (like the east facing one in this room) haven't been unboarded yet.

The red is just part of the genetic make up of this hybrid. If it was simply a manifestation of the amount of light falling on the leaf it would be all over. I have three phals with this red lining along the edge of the leaf. It is probably one that has some red in the flower color. It looks good where it is.

You're correct James. There is a little bit of red in the flower. I'll look for it in future orchids. :)

I have this phal too. I've had it for nearly a year. If you ever find out what hybrid it is, please let me know. Mine seems to grow darker green leaves naturally as I have it right next to phals that have yellow green leaves and the leaves have never gotten any lighter. and the purplish pigmentation at the edges of the leaves and along the stem has stayed with it the entire time I've had it, so I think that may just be normal for this particular hybrid.

I grow mine in phal bark. I think that I overwatered it a bit when I first got it, as I have seen no new growth on it until recently when I forgot about it for a couple of weeks.. and all of the sudden, it's growing new roots like crazy. I'm very excited that it's growing for me. I was worried that it wouldn't.

As far as I know it is a Lowes NoID, but maybe tossing a picture of it up in the Phal. alliance might give a guestimate as to what is in it? Mine's in sphag moss till it finishes flowering (lost probably seven of them so far, probably for being drowned in two inches of water in its pot) but it seems to be going strong so far. Although I am still waiting for it to dry out yet.
