New NoId Cymbidium

The Cymbidium I got as a Christmas present has lost its flowers and since I hate seeing the dining table empty of flowers, I got me this one. Hope you like it. I must try to find out what I'm doing wrong in their culture because I never get them to rebloom. As soon as the loose their flowers, they go outside in the garden. At least four o five of them have been outside since February-March last year. They get full sun from sunrise until early afternoon or mid afternoon in summer. They have grown nice and they have put out many new growths, but I think neither of them are spikes. Perhaps I'm not regular enough in fertilizing. Any tips will be more than welcome.

Gorgeous!

They do like enough fertiliser to flower, mine didn't until I put a small amount of slow release fertiliser in the medium (however I've since heard that can damage the roots, so I might just have been lucky with that).

How cool does it get in winter, they like to go cold enough (I aim for 5C, they don't like to freeze). If it's not getting that cold it might cause problems.

Temperatures do go down that deep and sometimes even deeper. We get a few nights of frost every winter, but seldom many days in a row (not lower than -3/-5 ºC and not longer than two or three nights in a row).

Lovely!

Hmm... I use both sustained release fertilizer pellets and some dilute water soluble orchid fertilizer on my Cyms. I did get flowers without much fertilizer tho, but very few.

How much are you watering? The media shouldn't dry out.

Sounds as tho they should be getting plenty of sun ... What does the foliage look like?

I think the best would be posting a few pictures of them so you can see how they look like, but I can't do that now (I'm in the office). I'm a bit afraid of over wearing, so perhaps I've under watered. Now, I'm watering once every two weeks, but in spring I water once a week and in summer with high temperatures several times a week. I fertilize with high N fertilizer or with seaweed extract (though I'm not quite sure if that's a fertilizer or more some kind of nutritional supplement), but when temperatures started to go down in autumn I fertilized with a high K fertilizer.

How long have you had them? All of mine skip a year before putting out multiple spikes, and I live in Cymbidium ideal climate.

The oldest is I think from 2010. Then I have some from 2012 and others from 2013. I've bought them all in bloom (except the oldest one) and none of them has bloomed again.

Do you give them enough light? May be some pictures indeed

Orquiadicto 03-05-2014 11:28 AM

They are outside and get all the light there is.

Your watering sounds comparable to mine, tho climate, potting media, and pot size do of course factor in ... but it sounds like your watering is probably good ...
