Is it normal for a catesetum to bloom twice during the life of one pseudobulb?
 

Hi, the catesetum in my profile picture is blooming again and I really excited. Is it normal for one to bloom twice? Have another one which succumbed to a bad insect attack and the pseudobulb lost all its leaves without blooming so am really curious.

Yes, I have some that bloom more than once per growth. Meaning...one or two spikes and then a few weeks or a couple of months later it'll send up another spike or two. That's not all that uncommon.

Personally, I'd rather see then send all the spikes up at the same time. I'd prefer the big flush of flowers/spikes over a couple of smaller blooms.

Thanks much and yes, it is a pileatum. Happy to hear it's normal and look forward to more blooms then. I was under the impression that catestum's bloom once and then we have to wait for the next growth of the psuedobulb before we get another flower. Cheers!

A strong plant of some species can bloom up to four times with one spike. Others bloom simultaneously with two spikes. A Catasetum expansum in my collection bloomed 3 times last year. All flowers were male.
