how to find burning sands 'emblaze'
Hello am a new member to this site, and relatively new to orchid collection. I saw an orchid at Wisley called 'burning sands emblaze' which was stunning. I have tried to find somewhere in the UK who sell this and have only found a supplier in the USA with very expensive export costs. I wonder if anyone knows where to buy this orchid as it must be a very popular species. fred compton

what type of orchid is it. have you asked wisley about it they are usually obliging
|
Thank you for your advice. I forgot to say that it is a Phalaenopsis. I did get in touch with the RHS who were very helpful but although they grow this orchid they did not know where in the UK to buy it. Can't believe that such a lovely specimen could be so hard to find.

Phalaenopsis Burning Sand ‘Ablaze’ HCC/AOS
(Seminole X violacia) This is an oldie – registered in 1987 – and it has a sweet fragrance and lovely colors….it was awarded by AOS in 2007. I first encountered this at the Massachusetts Orchid Society website two years ago. Since this is an old hybrid, it is not mass produced. You may be lucky to chance upon this in orchid shows in Europe but not in the latest catalogues of orchid sellers. |
Thank you very much for the information I have been searching without success for this and now I know why I have not found it. Shame really but will add it to my wish list and keep looking at shows. Very impressed with your knowledge of this hybrid. Thank you. fred compton

As Bud says some of the older ones are no longer mass produced so hard to find. Even some I bought a few years ago which were everywhere when I bought, I've found hard to replace a few years later.
Just one note, is that if you are looking at buying from anywhere outside Europe then you needs CITES an possibly other import paperwork. Less than scrupulous suppliers sometimes don't tell you this. If you are buying from the European Union then you don't need to worry about this. |
Thank you for this. Very useful advise. I will heed your advice about CITES. I have so far bought about 8 orchids which I liked but am having to learn quickly how to look after these. Bit of a steep learning curve for me but am enjoying it. I viewed yor photos and was so impressed, so professional. Once again thank you for your comments. fred compton
