Almost a year old Vivarium

3 Attachment(s)
A lot of changes, fine tuning the Vivarium, choosing the right plants, many things to think about over the year,

Single fan mounted inside as a ceiling fan blowing upward works best for my setup, on 24/7.
I tried a mister system for vivarium but too much water, so now my cooling and humidifying is all done by the fogger unit I installed originally, now it is on a timer to come on during daytime hours.

I water all pots and mounted plants manually, I enjoy being able to tender to my plants.

Still trying different orchids in there, they must be int. to warm and like low to medium light levels, I do get good sunlight shining though South facing window from Nov. - Apr.

Looking good! (Just an FYI side note: what you have is an terrarium or orchidarium. A vivarium would also include fauna of some sort. ;) )

We can't really call it an orchidarium because of legal issues with a certain company. I have a Nepenthes in there it eats insects, close enough.

It is an "orchidarium" and it looks very nice. Good work.

The term 'orchidarium' existed long before that company. and will exist long after that company is a worthless pile of dust. They really need to get clue. It would be like Kleenex, Jacuzzi, or Xerox trying to prevent folks from using their name when talking about tissues, hot tubs, or making copies with other brands of copiers.

And if they really want to get a ruined reputation: there's 2 respected orchideists one in Switzerland in Prangins (VD), L'Orchidarium, and one in France, L'Orchidium.

The origin of the name in French is given on Le Trésor de la Langue Française Informatisé (French CNRS reference dictionary) as in: A. ZIMMERMANN, R. DOUGOUD, Orchidées exotiques, Neuchâtel, 1959, p.70. :

" Il est presque impossible d'obtenir de bons résultats en cultivant les Orchidées en chambre, sans protection (...). Les meilleures réussites (...) ont toujours été celles obtenues dans des serres portatives ou des cases vitrées qu'on appelle aussi «orchidarium». "

tr:
It is almost impossible to have good results cultivating orchids in a room without protection (…) The best results (…) have always been given by portable glasshouses or glassed cases that are also named 'orchidarium'.

I don't really see the downside for their company. If people start using the term "orchidarium" they will "Google" it and their website will come up and they will get more exposure. Right? Maybe? Seems counterproductive to raise a hissy.

A very nice set up. May I ask what material you've used for your mounts? Is that hygrolon?

I cut a 3/4" PVC pipe to length, then I cut hygrolon 2" longer then pipe and long enough to wrap around pipe twice, then I tuck extra hygrolon into ends, tie some wire for a hook around hygrolon tube, mount orchid, water and enjoy.
