Unknown sick and dying orchid...SOS!

1 Attachment(s)
Hello! I am new to orchids, and have this unknown orchid that looks sickly. It seems to have little white specs on the roots, and some gnats flying around.

How do I take care of it? How do I keep it from dying? What kind is it?

Thanks for your help! I am utterly clueless and eager to learn more. Hopefully this little plant can be saved.

Also, how do I attach more than 1 picture?

Thank you!

Shriveled pseudobulbs makes it look like its been kept way too dry. The leaves dont look too bad at all. Im sure a more experienced grower will give you some good advice soon. When you post hit the paperclip above the text box and you should see a spot with multiple slots for uploading pics. Just select one pic per slot then hit upload.

Too wet I would say. Fungus gnats and springtails (the white dots) indicate old rotting media.
Which holds too much water.
That in turn roots the roots and causes the same symptoms as not watering.

See thats why I dont give advice!!!! I yield to Ordphien's advice. I have some oncs which I let get way too dry and the pbs look the same but they didn't drop leaves. Would the lack of leaves be a symptom of over watering? It makes sense.

It's just a guess. You could be right.
Over watering can lead to symptoms exactly like under watering.
In both scenarios the roots die, and they can no longer support the plant. Causing leaves to drop and psuedobulbs to shrivel.
The reason I think it's too wet is because of the presence of fungus gnats and springtails. They need moisture to survive and feed off mold and decay.
It's entirely possible the white spots on the roots are something else.

No I think your idea makes more sense. Either way I'd start by repotting.

After getting rid of the critters of course

How to get rid of critters?

Yay! Thanks! What is the best way to get rid if the critters, and how do I take care of this plant moving forward? Does anybody know what kind it is?

It also seems way over potted to me. It needs a well drained pot that fits the roots. Being an Oncidium they usually like a medium to fin mix that is watered just before it gets dry. Over-potting leads to root rot.

Silken what do you think about eliminating fungus flies?
