Phal Sogo Grape 'Fireball'

Picked this one up from Oak Hill a little over 2 months ago and the first bloom opened today. It's a bit more maroon/brownish than I would have hoped and definitely not one of my favs, but it's nice to see something new blooming around here.

As for the Phal Brother Sara Gold 'Sogo' that I bought at the same time then knocked off the top of the spike...looks like I've got a new one coming up. Fingers crossed! ;)

I like the dark Phals. What color were you hoping for?

solo1979 12-04-2007 10:11 PM

I was hoping it would be a little more on the grape side and not the brownish/maroon. More like how it looks on the Oak Hill website, but that could have just been the lighting.

Oak Hill Gardens

I do like that shiny effect that it has. Seems to be almost thicker and sturdier than the average phal flower.

Wow, there is a big difference between what Oak Hills picture looks like and yours, Solana. Is your pic the true color?? I wonder if you could brighten up the color with some extra growing light. Ive noticed that if I grow my orchids at the highest end of their prefered light levels the flowers are much brighter. I wonder if this would work for the next time your phal throws out some buds. Just a thought!

Wow that has amazing depth of colour.

Love it!

My pic is slightly darker than the true color but not by much. I did not have the flash on when I took this picture and maybe they did in the Oak Hill one. Still, there's appears to have more of a pink tone to it. I keep all of these guys under flourescent lights and only remove them from that area when they are blooming, so they can brighten up other parts of the house.

Hi, Solo. I'm curious whether the flower on your Sogo Grape from Oak Hill is still maroon colored, or whether it has "faded" to a purple?

Sometimes those glossy purple phals do open a lot darker.

Like you, I bought one of these, and am still hoping for a purple.

I have Sogo Grape also and must say that the Oakhill picture is not accurate. The shot is too brightly lit and too pink.

Yours certainly is in the dark end of the marroon spectrum, but try photographing in natural light with the light infront of the flowers.

My picture is more accurate as to the color expectations of Phal. Sogo Grape.

I ADORE it! Should you feel you can't get on with it, I would be more than happy to take custody!
