Rerooting a Cattleya Orchid help.
 

Hello everyone! I rescued a mini cattleya orchid from Lowes Foods. It is a Pot. Paradise Beauty Marcela. When I removed it from it's pot, literally all the roots were not viable, sadly. However. It's still holding strong and I have the bottom part all wrapped up in moist spanghum moss. Typically how long does it take before they send out new roots? Anything special I should be doing to help it? Sadly I don't have any kelp, wish I did I could spray. I appreciate all the advice! Also, I did clean up all the dead and rotted roots before I wrapped bottom in spanghum moss. Thanks again! :)

Last time I rescued a cattleya orchid I got at Lowes using water culture from Sun rm.N.E.
Now my orchid full of healthy new roots.

Thanks! I just checked it again after posting this and I do see a new little green root! I was about to give up on it. :)

I have had luck re rooting cats by trimming the dead away, and repotting and clipping the plant to the pot with a sturdy pot clip...I pot in very very large chunky bark mix....I only water every two weeks....I would be afraid with cats, that the extra moisture in a sphag and bag process would cause more damage by rot....cats love to dry out! good luck!

I put a couple rootless seedlings i had in a net pot with a bit of spag then put that in a glass with a bit of water at the bottom and a ziplock loosely on top. the net pot keeps the plant out of too much moisture i do keep the spag just slightly damp and check them every other day or so. I have been getting new roots and new growth. The glass is also on a heat pad for added warmth. It is under my grow light but I put a piece of keenlex over the ziplock so it only gets filtered light. Seems to be working.

The kind you get aquarium plants in. this one in fact had a plant in it a few years ago and I held onto it for no particular reason but I am glad I did.

AAHhhhh - thanks. I have 3 small mesh bags I use to clean seeds of gunk. They would work fine for this app. I have my first kilt Phal that I am trying to resurrect. Roots mostly fine, but it lost all its leaves. :-(

I think I have learned my lesson on "rescue" orchids. Blooming or not - REPOT! I waited til the bloom was done and ~ 2 weeks later a leaf fell. A week later another.

All roots had looked fine and green/gray thru the plastic container. NOPE! the interior (which I could not see) was JAM PACKED with sphag and I guess the poor little guy detested it.

No crown or root rot ( only 2 or 3 roots were slightly browned) or any other signs of bad things. Immediately after I got it repotted (a day or so) the little mini-phal lost its last leaf. :((

No signs of anything else and its 8 other buddies all looked fine.

So now I have placed it in critical care.

Rinsed with peroxide
Rinsed with Consan
Soaked in Superthrive
Sprinkled with cinamon

Now I have it in a plastic baggie tent.

Will try your approach next time.

I just pulled back the moss to check on the Catt and one bulb so far is pushing out a root, i can see it emerging. Should. Leave it in the moss until more roots come fourth or should I go ahead and pot it up, water it and let it be?

I have this hybrid and its in S/H. It is the slowest of my catt alliance plants.

Sorry if you already know this but catt alliance plants store nutrients in their pseudobulbs. Without roots, it sustained itself/grew the new root using the stored nutrients. The new growths will start at the bottom of the pbulbs (called eyes). If the eyes start to develop (triangular/conical bumps) but are wrapped in sphag, they might rot out. I would loosely clip a pbulb on a stake and let the pbulbs sit on top of the sphag.

That new root is probably from a new growth, not an old pbulb.
