Beautiful flower. This must be fragrant....after all it is in the Zygopetallum tribe.

|
* I correct myself: its not in the Zygopetallum tribe but in its alliance....
Aganisia Lindl. 1839, is a small South American genus in the orchid family (Orchidaceae), subfamily Epidendroideae. The genus was named after the Greek word ‘agnos’ (gratitude), perhaps referring to the sweet scent of its flowers. These dwarf, epiphytic climbing orchids occur in n mountain or savanna forests and alongside rivers in Trinidad, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, and Peru. These orchids show pseudobulbs and small flowers produced from a creeping rhizome. These flowers generally reach 4 cm in width. Their color is rare among orchids, varying from a rose-tinted violet to a blue-tinted violet. The flowers shows a short column foot and an elongate stipe. They are rarely cultivated. Family: Orchidaceae Subfamily: Epidendroideae Tribe: Maxillarieae Subtribe: Zygopetalinae Alliance: Zygopetalum Genus: Aganisia -Wikipedia- |
The tag read Acacallis cyanea X self. But the flower looks a little different than most of the pictures I've seen. It's been hard to culture not knowing what it truly is. It takes a lot of water and seemed to like the heat. I also had it in direct eastern sun outside over part of the summer. I think this summer it will go in a shaded western window and see how it responds. I'm going to follow the Charles and Margaret baker culture for acacallis.
And yes there is a slight fragrance. I just hope that it is not a death flower. It was one of my first orchids so it had a tough life in the beginning. |

By death flower I meant, I hope the plant isnt dying and giving one last flower to try and reproduce.
It was one of my first orchids(started the illness around this time last year) and my culture was not ideal or consistent. I think I have it figured out now as long as it makes it through winter. And yes its very satisfying to get my first spike and bloom. Especially since the guy told me not to get that plant if was just starting out with orchids. Of course I had to get it then, wanting something somewhat unique. |

Okay burz, thank you for explaining. I thought you meant that there were some orchids that were used specifically for funerals--especially since your avatar looks like the wheel of life. My mind works in mysterious ways. LOL
