Dove orchids are apart of the Phaius family should I plant them as such
When Ordering again from larry's orchids the other day I noticed that they had the phaius family as the same as my chariot of fire nun orchid. So should I pot them the same way in potting soil and lava rock?

Dove orchids have a different culture with a different environment. Potting soil might not be advisable since the root system needs to drain freely but must have a tight fit in the pot....potting soil and lava rock might rot it.
Don't be confused by the Phaius family traits....always go by the culture and where the plant originally is endemic from....read and research on orchids individually. |
Okay. They gove the same care guide for each plant. Since it is in the same family they had it in the same basic grow guide. I usually keep mine iinbetter gro special mix with a little sphag moss for a tighter fit.

Yours is absolutely stunning! ---------- Post added at 06:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:03 PM ---------- Any special tips this is my second one and it is much much smaller than my larger one from kawamotto. And I find the carter and holmes care sheet to be uh...slightly lacking in specifics. Such as when I should partially pull the water and the feed for its partial winter rest and what signs I should be on the look out for. |
Here's some good, general culture info for Peristeria...
Notes on Peristeria Orchids Good luck w/the new plant. |
Thank you @Katrina a actual time frame! Appreciate it.

I use sponge rock, charcoal, tree fern shards, coco chips and hydroton....even if it looks healthy spray with physan 20 when repotting to prevent any impending sickness....
this winter give it high light and in the summer give it Cattleya lighting. You have good humidity in Texas....this wants 50% and up. stop feeding fertilizer in winter (December 22)and water it once a week....but after Valentines day you resume liberal watering every other day and give it weekly weakly fertilizer....do not let the bulbs shrivel or wrinkle=this is where the energy for spikes come from.... nitrogen should be low to signal the plant to give out blooms. *tip: wipe the leaves with soap and water once a month to rule out fungi ....even if the leaves turn discolored thru time do not cut it since it still manufactures food and does its job as a leaf.... |
