clay pigeon nest for orchids

Hi all--

I was at a poultry show this past weekend and saw something interesting that might work well for orchids....

One of the suppliers carries clay pigeon nest bowls. Basically they are a shallow, rounded terra cotta container with drainage holes at the bottom. Pricing was somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 for $17 or 12 for $30. T

If interested, you can google Foy's Pigeon Supplies and look for pigeon nest bowls on their website or see if this link works for you: http://www.foyspigeonsupplies.com/ne...lay-nest-bowls

I plan to buy some to try out--hey, if they don't work I can always use them for my pigeons.

Interesting. They look good for stuff that spreads - bulbo's, for example - or stuff that likes to spread its roots laterally like a phal.

interesting idea....

I agree, they could prove useful for ramblers with shallow root systems. You might need to enlarge and/or drill more holes in the pot.

I was thinking that they would be good for rambling/spreading types as well....

I did pick them up and look at them when I was at the show--they're a nice heavy unglazed terracotta with a flat bottom and not tippy. Might be interesting to try them....

I don't know that more drainage would be necessary - that shallow of a depth of medium ought to dry pretty rapidly.

Clay Pigeon Traps

Hello everyone..
you can find clay pigeon traps for private individuals or commercial shooting grounds. We have a huge range of manual & automatic traps to suit all users.

These are not traps--they are the nest bowls that fanciers use (with an absorbent liner) to allow pigeons to raise their squabs.

I have seen them in cardboard and plastic, but these were the first ones of clay, same sort of terra cotta in clay pots, but a wider and shallower form which might be more useful for sympodial orchids.
