New to orchid board
Hi everyone. :hello I am a former lurker and decided to join because I searched the boards and didn't find an answer to my question.
I purchased a big leaves white phalaenopsis at Whole Foods for $5.00. It was a big size, thinking I can learn to grow orchids. (I had previously lost two because I didn't know that it took forever to "reflower" and threw it out.) The blooms has fallen off. Two new leaves has grown and are the same size as the older leaves. I see 3 new roots coming from the stem of the plant. After watching some videos on YouTube and reading some post, I examined the roots that were in the pot, I discovered these weird looking growths that doesn't look like a mitten shape coming out of the roots. What could it be? My inexperienced eye thinks it is a root within a root. I am waiting for flowers! I live in 9b and we don't really see a lot of cold temperatures. Should I trick it into flowering by offering it 3 ice cubes? |
No no ice cubes. I would look at the sticky the phal abuse ends here for the first 12 pages it will be of help. To get your phal to re bloom it needs a 10-15 degree temp drop at night for around 2-3 weeks. There are several members here on the board in florida who I am sure can give better advice.
The ice cubes can shock the plant and cuase some harm. Oh and welcome to the board. I started w phals and now have around.....75 plants that are non phals since.....June/July I think? Lol!! Good luck and good growing. |
Hello!
I'm not going to give phal advice. I have 100+ orchids but I stink with the phals. If you post pics of the weird root growth, it will be easier for others to help. Good luck, Laura |
Here is some pictures of the weird looking roots.

Doesn't look weird to me, just roots. Growing roots are a good thing! :)

It is growing new growth; phals will do this as well as many other orchids. Looks like the end of the orginal growth broke off and it is now growing a new piece.
