Mini Roses?
 

My daughter bought me a mini potted rose for mother's day this year. It was about four inches tall and it's now about a foot high and is showing signs of new leaf growth. I've had these before, but they don't seem to thrive. Anyone had any success with these? My roses in my back yard are my pride and joy, but I seem to be missing something when it comes to keeping these alive.

My best advice for long term care is plant it with the roses in your yard and give it the same care. It will be more sensitive to dry conditions, may need just a bit of protection from intense full sun, and a little extra winter protection.

PaphMadMan is right about planting it in the yard, Keep the mid day sun off of it, I have one growing in my garden that been growing for over 10 years and has never go over a foot tall but blooms all summer, it does best in late after noon sun, I care for it like any other rose in my yard

I've still got it potted, so I'm concerned that it's too late to plant it. I wish I'd thought of that a bit sooner. I'll go ahead and see if the ground isn't too hard. There should be a protected spot in my rose bed. The other roses there are fairly large.

I don't think it will have enough time to get new roots to keep it going all winter, I would keep it in the pot until spring that way it will have a chance to grow and bloom for you before next winter.

One year, just after Christmas, about ten years ago, I noticed some mini roses on the sale rack and I discovered that one was fragrant. I bought it. It struggled in the home but somehow managed to retain a few leaves and stay green. That spring, I planted my mini against the south side of my home (sheltered but full sun). I treat it just like the larger ones and give it a dose of granular rose systemic every eight weeks until the end of July. Mine stays about eighteen inches tall and blooms all summer.
In the house, they are super prone to spidermite as well as fungus problems. I'm not sure exactly what you should do at this point. The roots haven't had time to establish. Perhaps you could plant it, water well, and cover it with a rose cone? Or, put it somewhere far from your other plants and grow under a light (with a dose of granular rose systemic)?
If you grow it inside, just leave the plant light on about fourteen hours. I am growing Saffron under a plant light and that is what is recommended (it also needs 'full sun'). Good luck!

I only have the one plant light and that's for my orchids. No good way to isolate it. I've become addicted to orchids so just about every room in my house has one. I'll try planting it and covering it and see if it makes it, if not, well, I guess that's a lesson I've learned for next year.

What you could do is keep it in the pot for this winter and 'plant' it pot and all. That way the roots are not disturbed and the ground offers the roots extra warmth. It should go dormant and be fine. I just checked--mine is still green so you should be alright (still blooming). :)

Yes I think this is a good idea. I use to work at a store where we had trees ans shrubs and they would winter here in Wyoming in there pots all winter. I have done it at my house as well when I wasn't ready to plant it yet.
